Made it back from Tunica late last night and would like to say thanks to the 2+2ers that stopped by to say hello. We are lucky to have so many nice people reading and posting in this forum.

Every now and then at the Gold Strike, mostly at slower times, they will throw a spinner into the pot and I have been wanting to win a spinner bad and this is how I won my spinner. It is not good poker but I hope it is an interesting story.

Early Sunday morning, I sit at a table with some really horrible players, there might be two players that have a clue and I am not including myself in the two with a clue because close examination will prove otherwise.

All weekend big cards have been no good. Every table there was at least one guy that would call or raise with anything, flop two pair and his hand would hold up. Starting out Saturday night I was down $345 but with the help of player’s shares from the bad beat jackpot hitting twice Saturday night and the gentleman to my right raising with any two suited cards, I was only down, $97 when I returned to the poker room early Sunday morning.

It was a typical early morning table, pretty soft but people catching miracle cards. There was an older gentleman that played bad but talked good. He was constantly telling people to save their money because He had them beat. He wasn’t a bit obnoxious, just proud of his lack of ability and had a good line of bullshit. Really enjoyed making a hand and had excellent reasoning for drawing dead. A guy from LA with multiple tattoos and body piercings joined the game and there was another older gentleman at the far end that played reasonably well but called way to much. A young guy was in seat one (clearly a WSOP wannabe but no sunglasses or hat) and his girlfriend was in seat two. She was stone cold beautiful, Asian descent, friendly, smiled a lot and really brightened up the table. Lost her stack of chips but not her smile, (Class all the way IMO).

LA guy raises every time he gets the button, regardless of his starting cards. Big Talker likes to raise with two pair and doesn’t care if there is a flush or straight draw on the board and lots of action. We are well into the game and I start looking Big Talker and LA guy up every time I have a decent hand. My stack is growing and I start to talk back to Big Talker and talk to LA Guy like we are friends. Now my talk to Big Talker isn’t rude, it is just bullshit to encourage him. He liked the talk and action and it was profitable to keep him interested. There was a real nice guy to my left, he played decently but wasn’t catching cards so I tried to stay out of his way when he lit up and started betting.

I have A9o and call a raise from Big Talker; it is not good poker to call a raise with A9o, out of position with multiple callers so this isn’t a bad beat story, just an example of a hand of which Big Talker was really proud. The flop comes nine high and I bet out, four callers and the turn is an overcard but I bet when it is checked around to me, Big Talker raises and it is heads up, the river is a three, Big talker bets and I call. I show A9 for top pair and he has like jack three suited. He check raised the turn with bottom pair and caught a three on the river. Normally, I would not have been in this hand but it had been profitable to play with Big Talker. If he didn’t catch some miracle cards, He wouldn’t keep paying me for my good hands.

So here is my stupid play of the decade, the dealer throws out a spinner and Big Talker raises, I call with A2o (does a picture of a fish come to anybody’s mind?) The betting is capped preflop and yes, yours truly, the big dummy is still in the hand. To make a long story short, I show down unimproved, A2o, Big Talker has pocket queens and the older gentleman at the end has pocket Aces. Big Talker asks, “How much will you take for that spinner?” and pays $25. (I am not the only idiot at the table!)

I am really angry with myself for this stupid play and can’t really focus on the game. I am in the big blind with wired 7’s and for some reason, the dealer drags the blinds into the pot before the betting round is complete. Big Talker raises; I look down and think I need $6 to call. The dealer yells raise and I look around to see who raised and I was the raiser. The flop has a 4 and a 5 of diamonds and I call one bet. The turn is a 3 of diamonds and it is checked around to me, I tell Big Talker that I am betting my straight flush draw and if the 6 of diamonds comes, He’d better run. I get five callers, the turn comes a black seven, Big talker bets and everybody calls. All the others show a pair of some type or another, Big Talkers gets louder and cockier as each hand turns over, I talk back to Big Talker something like “Ought Oh! That’s not good enough!” Big Talker turns over two pair and I show trips. He asked me if one of my sevens was a diamond and it was because I wouldn’t have told him I had a straight flush draw if I didn’t have one.

The next hand my flush draw hits and I drag a small pot. The dealer changes and the New Dealer throws a spinner in the pot. I say”Oh No!, we aren’t going to have spinner hysteria again are we?”. Big Talker raises and I call in last position with Q4o. There are six players. The flop comes three hearts and UTG bets out. I call because my four is a heart, (stupid wasn’t it?) The turn is a blank and they check around to me. I bet and four call. The river is a blank and I bet again. Everybody folds to Big Talker and He looks at me and says” I can’t beat you!” folds and that helps sell LA Guy on folding. I am dragging the pot and normally, I would never show that bluff but Big Talker opens his mouth and says something about how lucky I was and I should enjoy that spinner, so I figured He asked for it. I said” This spinner is even sweeter, Do you want to know why?” and before He could say anything, I show the queen high and say, “Because I had absolutely nothing!”

Big Talker gives me a look that is worth a million dollars and is speechless for a little bit.
I play a little more but it is time to get breakfast and start for home. I end the weekend up $10.23 in cash but rich in fun!

Obligatory dumb question: what is a "spinner"?

It is a chip holder button that has a small point on the bottom and it will spin like a top on a stack of chips. Sorry for the poor image quality.

Is there some intrinsic value at the casino for people to go crazy over it when it's in the pot??

No, it is just stupid. I am pretty sure that you can't buy them, you have to win them.

It certainly seems to help them increase the rake! I'd guess those things cost about $0.10 each to produce.

When you have 7 or 8 people seeing the flop the rake gets maxed out early.
