View Full Version : moving up or up and out?

I have read with great interest the various threads about moving up in limits and the types of play common at different sites.
I'm very new with only 400 hands of .05/.10 at Pacific. I started with the $25 bonus, now sit at $32 and working to get to $60 so I can move up. I think I'm doing ok but I'm concerned that I'm learning to play against people I won't typically find at other games on line or at casino's.
I'm just thinking that if I learn to play in a place where the players are really loose (bad) that if I go to a live game or to another site some time later I won't be able to adjust my game.
So whats the groups opinion; stay at Pacific or try Poker Stars or something like that? Party is out until I feel ready to move to the .5/1 level.

On another topic; does anyone know if Pacific does partial bonus clearing? At the rate I get to play I don't think I will clear 20 times $25 in 90 days.

Thanks

The 0.05/0.10 players at pacific are most likely tighter than 3/6 players in a casino. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Learning how to beat loose games will hold you in good stead right through the levels (and in most LL live games)

Anyone at any level all you can do is learn to beat the limit you are at, as you move up you then use the grounding you have and then learn and adjust at that level.

Try posting your question on the best place for micro games in the micro limit forum (or do a search it has probably been discussed there before) as you will get a better response.

To be good you have to be able to adapt.

Every game is different in some way.

stick to what your doing...you will learn to adjust at each level you play.

I don't think pacific does partial bonus clearing, but you only need 50 cents in bonus points to clear the $25. It took me only a month to clear that bonus at the .05/.10 cent level. Just take a look at your bonus points and adjust your playing hours as needed.

If you don't know how to check your bonus points here's how;
In the lobby hit cashier
When the next screen comes up hit bonus points.

I think you will find that you are well on your way to clearing the free money.

I still have an account at pacific and maybe I will see you at the .10/.20 tables before I move out. (I want to hit $100 before I cashout there.)

I suggest you stay at pacific until you hit $300. The 25c/50c games are very easy to beat. I went through 25c/50c at 5.4BB/HR even after a 60BB downswing. I find that the players were only slightly better than in the 10c/20c games.

The 50c/$1 games though ouch, people actually start raising with good hands. I gotta get the vaseline after 1 week of that.

Thanks for the info.
I suspect you will be long gone before I get to the .10/.20 tables. I'm planning on sticking to earning a 300 BB bankroll for the next level before moving up. So I need to win $28 (not counting losses) to get to the $60 I need.
Thanks again and good luck.

I think from the advice here I will stay with Pacific until I get comfortable at the .5/1 level at least. If I keep using 300BB of the next level as my guide to moving up I will be in line with what you suggested.
And I will make a note to get the vaseline before starting .5/1 games /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I would stay, but I am getting sick of the problems there. My bankroll has grown significantly through bonus whoring and this account is just for fun now.

I will probably come back to Pacific at some point, but right now I am hitting sites that support poker tracker.

That has become a huge issue for me as my play develops. I want to use poker tracker. The sooner Pacific fixes this, the sooner I'll be back.

The site has other issues also, but it is still s great beginners site.

I haven't experienced the problems others seem to but I think that is because I generally play during the day on weekends and early evening during the week.
My wife experienced our first time getting kicked out on Friday evening and when I tried to get back in later I couldn't even get to the lobby.
Funny thing is that we tried Party and had the same problem with no log on. Poker Stars worked fine during that time. Right now I only play real money on Pacific.
I have played a little on Party and honestly so far I prefer Pacific. When I was on Party, if someone took some time, when they made there choice, it would flash through the next 4 or 5 players. Perhaps it is just to fast for me at this point but I didn't like it.
Anyway, good luck on you path to poker excelence and thanks.

The disconnects and not being able to use poker tracker is a problem.

However most log in problems occur at the beginning of tourneys. I havent had many problems other then that.

Also with poker tracker I think it is probably best that your play stabilizes before you use it. As a beginner you will be learning a lot and hands you play one week to the next will be very different.

I recently moved over to pokerstars so I could use poker tracker and also so I can adapt to better players. I killed the fish at pacific 5c/10c - 25c/50c but the same play didnt hold up in the 50c/$1 games. My 21" monitor is also on its way so I can try multi tabling before I hit Party.

The experience of learning to play against weak players wont hurt me and neither will the $150 I made from playing at pacific.

Pacific is a great place to build a bankroll and learn to play bad players. You have plenty of time to become a better player and every bit of experience helps.

Certainly disconnects would make me want to leave, particularly if they cost me money.
I have read a lot about poker tracker here and when the time comes will definately use it.
As you say, I'm in the learning mode. I was reading SSH this morning and found what is probably a big hole in my game. Of course reading and applying are two different stories but I'm anxious to give it a go this weekend.
Have you tried the micro limits at Poker Stars to see how they compare with Pacific?
I'm not "killing the fish" at this time but doing better than I expected. The biggest problem I'm having right now is to much variance which I believe says I'm still relying on good cards more than good play.

Good luck

I havent had much luck at pokerstars yet, the opposition is definately much harder than pacific. You dont get 5 people seeing the turn.

To beat the fish at pacific you have to loosen up a bit, suited connectors are king. Play them from anywhere in most games, I know you cant do this in tighter games but at pacific they are great value.

Just make sure you have pot odds and don't bluff.

Also hold onto bottom pair, gutshots and other longshot hands when the fish let you limp, this is where you win a lot of big pots.
