Yes, but you must be good and willing to put in some work.

I'll give two basic tips:

Obviously, first off, you must know the sport well. I'm by far no expert NFL bettor, but I can easily name every team's starting QB, WRs, RBs, TEs, Ks, and a number of their key defensive players.

Secondly, you must excercise control. Not betting to just chase action, not betting on teams you like/dislike, willing to wait for the good picks.

Many here are better than me, so perhaps they can say more. Theres also a decent chapter on sports betting in 'How to make $100000/year gambling' by Slansky.

Handicap. If you like NFL rate strengths of the team and forecast a favorite and by how much. Then look at the lines and compare.

You will have some lines that the sportsbooks/line are very favorable compared to your prediction. Ask yourself why. Is one team a big market and another small market for example.

Find favorable matchups and a reason for them. Keep stats as you go and continue to improve your knowledge so that you handicap more acurately than the public.

Simpler said than done.

Baseball can be beaten like a drum if you understand the game and the mathematics of the moneyline. I find spreads (ie football, basketball) much tougher to beat than moneylines becaue it's harder to find a good overlay. The vig is just too much with spread bets where in a game like baseball it is often non-existant if you know what to look for. In baseball (moneylines) the favorites get overbet because the psychology is to pick a winner rather than the team who is undervalued. So by doing your homework you can discover these undervalued teams while the suckers are laying way too much wood for what they consider a sure thing. Plus you have several choices and possibilities each day rather than just a few choices once a week so it's easier for the real golden opportunities to slip through the cracks and become available to you.

very insightful post....as someone who doesn't know a lot about betting baseball(but I do follow the game), I would love to hear more or to hear some of your predictions.
