It seems to me they can't because that would open up a lot of ways to cheat at these tournaments. Someone on another forum thought they could see because of audience reactions to the flop. He described the World Poker Tour, Wednesday, 9/1/04, on the Travel Channel where "Joe Cassidy opened with a raise holding A-J off suit. Antonio Estandiari bluffed by re-raising with 9-6 off suit. Cassidy just called.
The flop consisted of A-10-A and none of the cards helped Antonio. The audience cheered. "
He thought that the cheering audience indicated that they could see the hole cards of the players. Somebody here knows for sure?
