SMPT servers often require authentication (this is an option somewhere in your mail client).

It would help a lot to know the email software and provider you use (along with any error messages).

You are no longer on your local network right? Are you away?

It sounds like you're living off campus but still on a college network (just a guess), it could be non school too. I had this exact problem and like the second poster said, its a SMPT thing. You need a different outgoing and incoming address depending on who your provider is.

I can't tell you 100% how to fix it, but go to Tools->Accounts->properties (of the appropriate account)->servers. You will see incoming and outgoing. If these are the same, this is your problem. You will need to change your outgoing one. If you are using Comcast the address should be "smtp.comcast.net" If you are using another service, you'll have to figure out the right adddress. Post which service you are using and I'll see if I can figure out what it is.

make sure you havent passed your mailbox size limit. one picture via email sent from a friend could do that on the smaller mailbox sizes.

Some ISP:s block port 25 (Mail sending port, SMTP) to aviod spam and wants you to use their SMTP server instead.
