View Full Version : You guys need to come to Minnesota to play cards

First off...let me preface by saying I've only played cards at Canterbury Park here in the Twin Cities, MN. I have not played anywhere else...Vegas, Atlantic City...I've only been playing for 6 months. I have read posts by other players who have nothing but bad stuff to say about their casinos.

I've had the opportunity to talk with a couple of pros here and there, as well as travellers who come through... and they all tell me the same thing...We have NO IDEA how good we have it here at Canterbury for poker playing.

a) - we're a racetrack, not really a casino...so no slots/video poker/loud noise - we do have guys who yell at the screen a lot when their horse is losing, but that's life.

b) - LOTS of tables, and wide open and well lit.

c) - we can get up to 30-60 - I know that's not a lot for you super pros...but decent players can make profits. We've got a few guys, esp. good lo-limit players who are occasionally making a living on the 6-12/8-16 tables (or so they say)

d) - bad beat jackpots....lots of those.

e) - good management...they aren't afraid to throw out a disruptive player or talk to him.

One slight downside...there's no longer any smoking at the table...and nothing really in the way of comps (but hey, again, we're not really a casino) - still a basket of fries will only set you back $1.65

I'm telling you, guys...if you get a chance, come check it out...it rocks...I like to think of it as a hometown football team, where you say "Our cardroom" with a sense of pride. Now if I could just keep the pros from knocking me out of the tournament.

Yeah, Minneapolis in the winter sounds great...

Now that you have me interested, tell me more about the regular games that are spread (not we can get up to 30-60, what DO you get). Any stud or omaha?

Why would no smoking be a downside?

Does the Casino have any rates available at local hotels?

coming up to canterbury soon dontch???

It started on Thursday and will run to the end of next week...It's the Canterbury Park Fall Classic.

info on it can be found here at www.canterburypark.com (http://www.canterburypark.com) - that goes over the buy-in and limits of the tournaments on each day. Unfortunately, a cash squeeze. (precipitated by my getting busted out by Mike Sexton) will limit my participation. I've got enough in my gambling account for two satellites...so maybe I'll take a shot at some point.

Spread...2/4 - 3/6 - 6/12 8/16 15/30 up to 30-60 for Holdem and 7 card stud...also have 8-16 Omaha and Omaha hi-lo and some real occasional 7 stud/8 - those games are fairly rare...usually only one or two tables.

Not sure about hotel rates...like I say, we're less of a casino and more of a racetrack. Kinda out of the city a bit, so I'm sure hotel rates are less...might be a discount for the tournament.

And winter hasn't kicked in yet...not too bad...45 degrees and balmy...besides, if we didn't have winter, the mosquitos would be friggen unbearable.

Sounds good, I've heard other players compliment this club. The website answers most questions, it even gives a list of nearby hotels.

What is the rake or collection?

In the future, please provide all pertinent information. Don't make me wring it out of you.

Oh yeah...the rake.

10 percent up to a maximum of 4 bucks. - Pretty much across the board...there's also a 1 dollar jackpot drop for pots over a certain amount (I want to say 15 bucks) - but I don't believe it's taken from the 15/30 or 30/60 games, because I'm not sure you're eligable to win the jackpot in those games.

JP rules, BTW are A's over 10's or better beaten by quads or better...both cards must play, and with a full house, one of them must be an A.

reduced rake for shorthanded games.

The only saving grace about the Cantabury Card Club is that it is the only card room in the state of Minnesota.

First, the rake is excessively high... $4 + $1

Second, excessive tipping is encouraged... $1 or more

Third, they play a nine man table instead of a ten man table. (Notice how that affects the above.)

Fourth, they do not play a dead button. (Again, notice the effect on the above.)

Fifth, about 40% of their "customers" are dealers and management on the clock.

I have other issues with Cantabury but those are the main ones.

The best thing that could ever happen to them is to get some serious competiton. If they don't, I could easily see the place closing its doors in a year or two.
