In the Borgata super satellites for the 10k buyin, the original buyin is 200 for 2k in chips....the rebuys are 200 for 2k more in chips (if you are under 2k), and the addon is 200 for 4000 in chips!

I usually lke to rebuy at all possible times, but since the addon is worth double the rebuys, is it correct to forgo rebuying, as you will not be getting nearly the same value as you would from your addon after the break? It feels like its correct, but Im not the expert on this, so if anyone knows please let me know, thanks!!

The add-on *is* more valuable than the re-buy. But if the re-buy was profitable before (that is, if you are a better-than-average player in whose hands chips are worth more than what they cost you), it's still profitable regardless of the add-on's particulars.

If you are forced at gunpoint to enter the tourney, and only have $400 to your name, then don't re-buy--just add-on. But you shouldn't be playing in the tourney if you can't afford the re-buys *and* add-on.

Re-buy!

I can afford the rebuys plenty....Im just talking about it from an EV standpoint. What if everyone in the tourney pays $400 for 6000 in chips (by buying in and then adding on), and I pay $600 for 8000 in chips. Seems like I'm getting a raw deal.
I'd still rebuy if necessary to ensure that I am around for the addon period. In general I would rebuy the moment the tournament began. However because of the big discrepency between the original buyin and rebuy amts, and the addon amount, I wonder if it's still most favorable to make the rebuy right off the bat, or only to do so if necessary.

2k chips are not worth $200... because you can get 4k chips for $200

if you rebuy you are paying more for chips than the average person assuming everyone is buying the addon.

Okay a quick question then:

Scenario: Initial buy of 2000 chips for 200 and you get AA on the button first hand. A player with 4000 in chips pushed all in. You call and win. Don't you want those extra 2000 in chips now?

By not taking the initial rebuy you are costing yourself 2000 more potential chips.

You paid 200 for 2000 and now have 4000 on hand number 2, vs paying 400 for 4000 and having 8000 on hand number 2.

Yes chips lose value as the game goes on but I want as many chips as possible to play with. Same logic can be said for taking the add-on.

A good discussion on rebuying btwn Fossilman and Lori

im not a game theory specialist, however i do understand your point that you want more chips because you can doubleup faster. i suppose that jump starting to 800 instead of 400 is a valuable tool, but i dont think that accumulating chips at a faster rate compensates for the fact that you are purchasing chips of less value for a higher price. someone correct me if im wrong

I would prefer to play a few hands before I decide to do an initial rebuy. If I play a few hands and it becomes obvious that there are some really live wires who want to gamble, then I will take the rebuy right away. If I've got a tougher, calmer initial table, I will simply try to build my chips up wait for the add-on.
