I have kind of an odd question. I often see people talk about playing 1000 hands in a day. How long are you playing and how many tables?

I ask because I sat down at 2:00 and played 4 full tables of .05/.10 on stars and when my session ended at 3:30, I had played a whopping 210 hands.

So to play 1000 a day, I would have to play for 9-10 hours? Damn.

There are a lot of reasons for high hand counts. First and foremost is hours. A lot of the pros and semipros put in easy 40 hour weeks playing poker, some put in a whole lot more than that. Even many who don't play poker like a job will, when they do sit down, put in a six or nine hour session (or more!).

Second is multitabling. Some tables are faster than others, and often you'll see people playing 6 or more tables.

Third is short handed tables. In addition to 'high speed' tables such as PS offers, you'll also see 6-max tables. Both of those things will double or triple the hands per hour. Also at higher limits you'll see somewhat fewer people seeing the flop (which speeds things up drastically) and there will be marginally fewer showdowns, far fewer that are multiway (which also speeds things up drastically).

if you multiply your rate correctly, it's more like 7-8 hours.

i once tried playing 12 tables at once, i can knock out 1000 hands pretty fast like that.

and that most of us don't have lives outside of poker

That doesn't sound right. That's only 35 hands/table/hour, which is about what you'll get at a B&M card room. Most online sites deal 60-65 hands/hour for 10 handed games. At that rate it takes about four hours at four tables to play 1000 hands.

I didn't think it sounded right either so that's why I posted this question. I am going to try again tonight to see if it was just a really slow night.

I could be slow because like previous poster said, more people are seeing the flop and having less showdowns.

I was just curious if those who were saying they play a thousand hands a day were playing 9 hours a day on 10 tables on speed.

I often leave tables that are too slow. If you continually see the "x you have 15 seconds to act" message, that's a sure sign that your table is moving very slowly.

I play 4 tables for 3-5 hours a day. That's 250 hands per hour.

Because I need to pay my rent.

Betting the river and continuously being paid off by 2nd and 3rd best hands gives them the ability to play forever!

I get in about 600-700 hands in a 3-hour session of 3-tabling 25c-50c.

Exactly - 4-tabling should be close to 250 hds/hr.

I play around 40-hours a week, but don't have a consistent schedule at all.

2-hours one day, 10-hours the next, and 0 hours the day after that...or whatever.... depending on whether I'm actually going to pretend like I have a life or not.

I get in around 20 hours, most of it coming on the weekends, thanks to school.
