View Full Version : low variance?

What would the expected variance per hand or hour be for a "typical mid-limit" game of hold'em, omaha8, stud, and stud8?

I think my observed session variance is a lot lower than it should be. This bothers me because it seems to indicate not only that I'm hunkering down and playing better when I'm down, but also that I'm playing stupidly when I'm up. My sessions are always the same amount of time, so I'm not artificially affecting my session variance by varying session length.

Would anyone be willing to share their observed variances and/or model a few different games -- e.g. with Poker Probe or similar software and varying the composition of the table?

And, if the discussion parallelism can happen without bogging down), if we assume (temporarily without proof) that my variance is lower than it should be, what

..., what specific steps (i.e. more specific than "play better when you're ahead, duhh") can be suggested to fix it?
