This was my first hand at this table. I felt like MP1's play was consistant with someone who had AA or KK and was worried about me having AA or JJ, or the flush. Should I have bet the river? I felt this was a 'only better hands will call' scenario. Is this correct or just weak/scared?

bet the river. you should be betting in many situations thinner than this one

"I felt this was a 'only better hands will call' scenario"

not at all, you have to bet the river when the biggest of all blanks comes, any pair will call, hell even A high might call. no one raised you on the turn, no flush str8 or overcard came. bet. you missed out on 2 BB in all likelihood.

The "You need to have the best hand >50% of the times that you are called" mantra only applies to headsup situations. Here you have two potential callers so if both will call then you show a profit by by betting if you have the best hand only 35% of the time.

If you don't bet this river, what river do you bet? A perfect card hit for you. The deuce of nothing. If one of the other people in the hand had a flush, they would probably raise the turn. You have to bet this river. If the other guy has KK, so be it.

Thanks for all the replies. I just turn into a big chicken on the river, don't know why.

I'm the same way actually. It's easy enough to review other people's hands and say bet the river, but when I play my river aggression is about half my Flop/Turn aggression. I have to start following my own advise.
