View Full Version : Unfair situation and a question on how I played a hand

I am a pretty good player that plays a lot of touranments. I just found this site and I think I like it.

Well, at the World Poker Series in May I got knocked in the first big tourney. (the No Limit Texas Hold'em one). I didn't really care but I was a little mad at management and you will see why. However, I wasn't TOO mad because I knew that I had a very good shot at winning the $10,000 main event or at least making the final table.

One hour into the tourney I get A /images/graemlins/spade.gifA /images/graemlins/club.gif. A guy goes all in in front of me and he has more chips than me. I am the last one to go so I take my time. I think for about seven or eight minutes and the table called the tournament director over. I thought it was a rash decison to call him over. I finally concluded that I needed to make my move and finally called. He turns over K /images/graemlins/heart.gifQ /images/graemlins/heart.gif suited and I am delighted to find that I am ahead in the hand. I am happy with the read I made.

Anyways the board comes 2 /images/graemlins/heart.gif 4 /images/graemlins/heart.gif 9/images/graemlins/heart.gif. I knew I was in trouble and I started to doubt my read.

The turn comes 5 /images/graemlins/heart.gif and I realize that if another heart comes, we split the pot. I start chanting: "HEART, HEART, HEART" and to my delight the T /images/graemlins/heart.gif appeared! I couldn't believe I got so lucky in the hand!

But then I see the chips being pushed to my opponent and I peacefully explain to the table that we both have flushes. The say his was a better 5 card hand but then I very calmly point out that I have AA and therefore it should be my pot or at least a split pot. They call the tournament director again and he explains that I lose the hand. After a few more minutes of arguing, I am escorted from the room.

I know that they were a little harsh and possibly (probably) incorrect but I am smart enough to know that there is nothing I can do. My question is - did I play the hand wrong? What was a better option? Did I make an awful read?

thanks a lot

LOL.... very funny satire. Though I think you laid it on a bit thick.

Yes, very nice. I think you needed to also ask us, who you have never met, for advice on cheating on your taxes, signing up your dog as an affiliate, and also if it is cool to play poker during your shift at work, since, you know, the company has plenty of money. Also, what if Party sends you a double payment, should you keep it? And.....

I think you played it fine, but hey you should have won the pot! You got a flush and pocket rockets as a backup - very solid.

Seven or 8 minutes for a decision that should take a trained monkey seven or eight nanoseconds?

But then I see the chips being pushed to my opponent and I peacefully explain to the table that we both have flushes.

You both *do* have flushes, and his king high flush beat your ten high flush.

Conclusion #1: Learn the rules before you play.
Conclusion #2: Stop grandstanding (which is exactly what waiting even one minute to call a preflop all-in with pocket aces amounts to)

Even Commander Data would have gotten the joke.

Tom,

Did Erostratus login under your screenname again?

Also, next time you should address this post specifically to Fossilman, David Sklansky, or Mason Malmuth, since they're the only ones who will give you the right answer.

You should really try to get your money back from the Horseshoe, you're right, you both did have flushes. Split pot!

You really should write a letter to management stating that, for such a large buy-in tournament, YOU had the better starting hand...thus resulting in AT LEAST a split pot...you weren't spending $1000 to play with ninnies, so I think the TD's ruling is WAAAAAAAAAY off base.

They should have thrown the pot winner out of the tourney on principle.

LMAO
