View Full Version : “Fossilman at Bike Party” Report

Wednesday night at the Bicycle Casino WSOP Champion Greg “Fossilman” Raymer was gracious, accessible thoughtful and witty (nothing less could be expected based on his posts on the forum!). He had lots of time to chat and made himself available to everybody.

Greg indicated he didn’t yet see the WSOP ESPN episode with the first Mike Matusow incident and was curious regarding what was shown. After describing the scene, we let him know that most of the RGP and 2+2 world agreed that under those circumstances they wouldn’t have shaken Mike’s hand either and that many of us were interested in what he scribbled in his notebook. Regarding the notebook, Greg couldn’t remember (or wasn’t telling). ESPN color commentator Norman Chad’s “on air” guess as to what was written gave us all a chuckle.

The “mysterious 2+2 celebrity” was a no-show /images/graemlins/frown.gif but his (and Greg’s) friend Dangerous Dan made it (and wonders why he hasn’t gotten in touch with him!). Dangerous Dan, Hero and I had a lot of time to talk to Greg’s dad Phil Raymer, who if it seems possible is even more charming, intelligent and witty than Greg.

Somebody asked if Greg had any offers to appear on Letterman or Leno and he said not yet (perhaps they are waiting for the final ESPN show to air given that to much of the viewing audience, Greg’s win is still unknown). Later while chatting with Greg’s dad Phil I mentioned that perhaps last years champion Chris Moneymaker last name worked especially well for him in terms of publicity. Phil agreed - who could imagine a more perfect name for a poker champion. Greg told us about some of the interviews he had and indicated that sometimes it was difficult to come across well when the interviewer is thousands of miles away and you are speaking into a headpiece (even at the speed of light, there is a significant delay when signals are bounced off a satellite that takes some getting used to).

Like any father Phil mentioned that he had concerns about Greg’s move into full time poker. I made the case that, based on what we all know of Greg, he will probably have more wealth years from now and that the only other WSOP champ I would comfortably say the same about is Dan Harrington. IMHO Greg is that well grounded and Phil conceded this was true and that he was very proud of his son.

We all got a kick out of the Bike’s poster hung on the wall of The Grill: It said “Welcome Fossilman, WSOP $5,000,000,000 champion”. With that much money Greg could own a bank!

Anyway, thank you Greg and good luck in the Bike’s Legends of Poker WPT Final Event. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Regards,

Rick

I enjoyed your great report.

I'm very glad Fossilman won. This is a big plus, and not just for Greg, - But for all of Poker.

"many of us were interested in what he scribbled in his notebook"

i was watching that today and we dont at any time see him scribble anything. the commentator makes reference to him doing so but that's meaningless. we do see greg pull out the notebook which has some papers in it and then the next shot we see he is holding one of those papers. so the question really should be what was the paper? a "kick me" sign to tag on mike's back later in the day would be my guess.

Here is an interesting ploy I have thought of doing at a poker table but so far have not done so.

Have a business size card near your stack. One side is blank. Every once in a while look at the underside of the card and take normal pains not to let anyone else see it. Do this in usually 'hard' circumstances or on the river, etc. Leave the card 'by accident' partially slipped under the elbow rest when you go to the bathroom or take a break, say 50% of the time or whatever is necessary. This rest of the time you take the card with you or slip it into your shirt pocket etc.

On the underside of the card have printed out:

Why are looking here? or,

What are you looking for? or,

Is this really any of YOUR business?

Or ??...

(PS this may be aganist the rules - having a card etc on the table, so it may be best to use a shirt pocket ploy and then accidently leave the card on the table at a bathroom break etc.)

even not shaking his hand...the minute he started going on that "I got heart" rant....I would have had to hit him with "you aint got sh!t..."...(It was the first thing that hit my head when I saw him saying that to Greg...)...followed by the obligitory 'F#$k you Mutha.....".....then again that's probably why I bust and Greg dominates......

People who taunt at the poker table (or any competition), do so to get a reaction out of you; they want you to get angry and show it. They need to know that they have gotten under your skin.

Greg did the best possible thing. Just look at Mikes initial reaction; he sat right down with that WTF look on his face and then switched the act back on to hide his reaction. Inside, he was pissed that Greg didn't react.

What exactly is the situation with Mouth and Greg that you guys are referring to? I don't have cable...

I know. I just hate a bully. I really can not stand him, (what little I've seen of him). I know how I would have reacted.

Having said that I know it would be wrong and I know you really need to try and control yourself. Then again I'm not a big believer in keeping stuff inide in those situations just to look under control. I think either way you handle it I think you have to make sure it doesn't affect your play. How you make sure of that is another thing.

My thanks to Rick, Marc Gilutin, and the Bike for hosting this party. My family and I had a great time. My wife and daughter came with me, and my parents flew down from Seattle to attend. I saw some old friends, and met a lot of new ones. And the food was great.

Thanks, Greg Raymer (FossilMan)

There are a few discussion of this on the WPT and Other TV Events Forum. Here are two links:

There may be a few more discussions on some of the other 2+2 forums along with several on RGP. This will probably be the most discussed "taunt that backfired" in poker history /images/graemlins/smile.gif.
