I'm not fully understanding what the concept of a protected pot means/applies to. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Let's say you and I are playing at the same table.

I raise before the flop and your re-raise me with JJ. A really loose calling station type player cold-calls your raise and I call.

The flop is 2 /images/graemlins/heart.gif7 /images/graemlins/club.gif5 /images/graemlins/heart.gif

I check, you bet, the calling station calls, I call

The turn is the 4 /images/graemlins/spade.gif

I check, you bet, the calling station calls, I call

The river is the K /images/graemlins/heart.gif

I bet out.

Because the calling station is behind you, he is protecting the pot. In other words, I cannot be bluffing because I know that the calling station will call. You know that I would not bet into the calling station on a bluff, so therefore I am not bluffing.

However, this only works if I am a good player and you know that I would not attempt to to bluff the calling station. If I am a total nutjob who likes to make hopeless bluffs then the pot is not protected.
