I've been having a horrible time at $30+3 this past week. in 20SnG's, i was only ITM twice. 1st and 3rd.

i had a $500 bankroll. I have $50 left. i realized as my bankroll dwindled, so did my confidence, and fun of playing.
it was like i was playing scared.

but i'm still up over $1500. i guess it's psychological. even though i know i'm still up, seeing me lose 90% of my online acct was demoralizing.

so whats the consensus of what bankroll you should have b4 u play?

I'm new, what does SnG stand for??

My rule of thumb for a Tournment buy in is, I will not risk more than 15% of my bank role. For example if I have 400 in my account I will allow my self to play the $55 dollar buy in. (55/400=13.75%) I if I have $300 in my account I will not play the $55 dollar,(55/300=18.3%) I will play the $33 dollar until I can build the bank roll again.

Need more information. What is your ITM and ROI? How many tournaments have you played?

If you need to worry about your bankroll, play at a lower level. Once you win consistantly at $20, try some $30.

I havent imported auguest tounry histories into poker tracker yet. Here are my stats from when i started poker tracker in July:

# buy-in cost
46 $30+3 ($1518) won 1950 profit 432 itm=33% roi=28.5%
80 $20+2 (1760) won 2000 profit 240 itm=35% roi=13.6%

i had a streak of coming in 3rd at $20+2

30% roi isnt bad.

but my question was: whats the general concensus on the bankroll needed for $30+3?

in craps, it's 10x amount of $ you're risking on the table. and when you've lost 7x, then quit. if you play with that 3x remaining, then you're playing scared.

for blackjack, it's 20x your bet. ie: $5 table, then $100 backroll. again, if you've lost 70% then walk away.

obviously in $30+3, it's more than 15x buyin since my $500 isn't enough. But what is enough???

This is in the FAQ somewhere. The general consensus is between 15 and 30. Personally I think 15 is much too short and 30 is fine. Others with a better grasp of the maths involve point out that with ITM/ROI of say 40/30, the risk is (I'm pulling these numbers out of the air) like 5% with a 15-tourney roll and only goes down to maybe 2% with a 30.

It's personal rather than mathematical. Do you want to grow the roll and segregate it, or do you want to take underfunded shots because it's easily replaced.

Again, the FAQ (slides down this page until someone bumps it) has links to a couple good discussions on this.

I would normally say $900 for $30 SNGs. However, for you I would likely suggest more, maybe around $1200 to have a reasonable ROR simply because your consistent 35% ITM is very troubling and could be dangerous. Remember this is a safe bet and would reduce your ROR to a fairly low number. The 15% of your bankroll suggestion is lunacy as you can very easily bust out or be down to very low levels quickly with that calculation.

I keep a 1k bankroll. Its simple, even, and very productive.

I honestly dont recomend anything less then $900 for anybody. My roi is 35%, and I hit dips of -$500ish all the time.

why is 35% itm troubling? thought that was good, and 30% roi is also good?

Once you lose your confidence, no amount of bankroll is correct.

Next time you go on a losing streak drop down, even all the way to a 10-1 or 5-1 to get your confidence back. I have a high RTI and I have gone on a long streak of no ITM finishes, as many as 12. So to protect myself from ROR and loss of confidence I want at least 50 buy-ins. This will be very hard to go broke with, plus not make you play scared when you are not ITM for a 8-12 buy-ins in a row.
