according to poker calculator, A3 is 53 percent vs. A2 in a heads up hold 'em game. the same goes for K3 vs. K2, etc. can anyone explain why this is? i can't figure it out.

Either hand is equally likely to pair the kicker but when there is both a 3 and a 2 on the board the A3 will often win. E.g. board of KJ732.

because a pair of 3s beats a pair of 2s.

K32xx - K3 or K2 who wins this one?

When both a 2 and a 3 are on the board, A3 often beats A2, e.g., on a board of KQ532. A3 makes more straights than A2 even though A2 may look more connected (note that A2 never flops an OESD but A3 has an OESD on a flop of 456). When there is a flush on board of the same suit as the 2, A3 and A2 tie, but A3 may make a higher flush if the board is all of the same suit as the 3 but includes a 2. Finally, it is slightly easier for a 2 on the board to be counterfeited, e.g., on a board of AA322, A3 beats A2.
