Honestly now, if risk of ruin was of no concern where would you be playing?

Me, I might take a stab at the $20+2's /images/graemlins/smile.gif.

I would like to think it would be the same limit I am at now as it is the highest limit I can beat at the present moment. Screw that like somone said earlier I would be on the tournie circut playing the best and donating money like it was going out of fashion.

You kind of beat me to punch with a post I've been thinking about for a while. I was going to ask, if you won the WSOP main event next year, what level poker would you play after that?

I was curious because the most recent winner has said here that he was in a 300/600 game and I've heard rumors of Moneymaker playing in some big games after his win.

Me personally, if I won, I'd be like Bill Gates when he goes to LV. Strictly low limit, relax and enjoy myself.

Do you really play only for the $. You must get some enjoyment out of it.

I think Fossilman was in those games prior to his win, anyway. he didn't suddenly jump up there because he had a nice score.

I'd play 15/30 online just for lunch money, then I'd go to the local casino and buy into the 2/4 game for $10,000.

[/ QUOTE ]

The only real enjoyment I get out of poker anymore is of the "Man, this sure beats diggin ditches, and when I play online, I get to play in my underwear" variety.

But seriously, how much can one enjoy mathematics, really?

I mean, do you want me to tell you I get an adrenaline rush every time I have a big hand and "play it well," making a big score? Or maybe that I get the same adrenaline rush every time some mope with a Party Poker cap and some stupid sunglasses spikes his set on the turn and check-raises my top two pair, then gets a button so he can go tell his bud back at the $5/$10 table that he's succeeding wildly in his foray into the high side?

None of this is really interesting, exciting, or otherwise enjoyable, to tell you the truth. I am made neither happy nor sad by any of this. I can only see each hand as just another in a seemingly endless string of hands. I make a mistake from time to time, tweak my game, move forward.

I like the feel of clay chips in my hand, cascading down as I shuffle them. I enjoy the moment I see myself rolled up, or when I get my big flop and there's a bet and a raise to me. I even "like" a small percentage of the people I encounter, both B+M and online.

But general "enjoyment?"

Nah. That would mean I would have to see past the railbirds panhandling, the mopes looking down at their feet when they ask to be put in a game ("Go come/come??"). It would mean I would need to skip describing the feeling I have every time I hear a slot machine's bingbingbingbingbingbing as I'm walking through the casino to the card room. It would mean I would need to disregard the black felt under my fingernails. It would also mean that I would need to ignore the extra 15 pounds I'm carrying, the eyestrain, and the computer hardware upgrades, which I otherwise wouldn't care less about.

No, I don't enjoy it. there's very little mystery. Invest...gain, gain, loss, gain, loss, gain, gain, etc. ad infinitum.

I recall a column written by Roy Cooke some time ago which stated that if you did not LOVE playing, you shouldn't play. I have always respected his stuff, but I thought this was inane advice. If you HATE it, that's another story. You really should quit. But if you are merely indifferent, I see no reason to quit whatsoever.

Picture this. You go to your boss at the plastic extrusion factory. You say "Mr. So and So, I simply do not feel fulfilled in plastic extrusion. I do not LOVE the extrusion of plastic moldings, suitable for use in children's toys and electronic equipment packaging. Oprah tells me that I must therefore go and wander the Earth, hoping that my Destiny will become apparent to me. Good luck with your little extrusion thing you have going here, and good bye."

Now GOLF. There's a game you can enjoy.

If there was no money involved in poker, i'd get very little enjoyment out of it.

Edited to say: actually... none, i'd rather play some other card game or play something else.

except for big money tournaments, then that'd be cool, at least there is a goal of winning 1st place, in cash games my goal is to win a ton of money, if money didn't matter to me, who gives a sht

I'm kind of in Rushmore's camp here. At first I really enjoyed the thrill of playing, but now I mostly do it because its a hobby that can earn me some money to do other things...like golf.

So to answer the original question, if bankroll wasn't an issue, I'd spend 11 months of the year mostly golfing, and then stay in Vegas for a month and play as many WSOP events as I could.

To quote my idol, John McGlaughlin: "WRONG!"

You play poker for money, or there's no point.

You play golf for the sake of playing golf. It is the perfect game. You're out in nature. It takes skill. It cannot be mastered. You do not need an opponent. Your great moments will be rivalled only by the definitive moments of your life, like weddings, childbirths, etc... Your worst moments will be so bad, you'll consider quitting, hanging yourself, etc...

Golf is the perfect metaphor for life.

in fact, in a previous post on this thread, I answered "golf". Anyway, I agree that golf is just as, if not more frustrating than poker, however there's a built in valve. you get pissed off in golf, because you sliced into the rough? you now get to grab a stick, swing it as hard as you can, and hit something. nothing more fulfilling than that. Maybe if they let me swing a stick at people who river me, I'd love poker more.

I don't know what your situation is, so don't take this the wrong way. You're telling me that someone of your intelligence makes more playing poker than you could in some other field? I highly doubt that. There must be something else that attracts you to poker other than the money.

Like I said, I don't know you, so I could be wrong.

Man, this post is loaded, LO-DED.

OK, seeing as you have been gracious enough to issue not one but TWO disclaimers, and seeing as there's at least one backhanded compliment, I will reply to this post, FWIW.

As I said, the biggest appeal is the fact that a person can be self-employed AND make a decent living without being a proctologist or dental hygienist.

I don't HATE playing poker. I simply don't really like it very much anymore, like when I was younger. I remember REALLY enjoying everything about it. In retrospect, I sort of didn't know what I was doing (which is OK, since nobody I was playing with knew how many cards were in the deck), which is what made it really fun.

It was mysterious and fun. Now, it is not.

Think of it like that really hot woman you've been ogling at the Starbuck's or wherever. After you trick her into dating you, then dupe her into shagging you, then moronically ask her to move in, then find out WAY too much about her...well, it just ain't the same. You start fantasizing about your less attractive, but COOLER girlfriends. You know--the ones you treated like [censored]?

But I digress.

I have owned and operated several successful businesses, making a nice, comfortable living. Good for me.

Can I make the same money playing poker? Yes? No? Probably? I don't know.

But all things considered, it's not as bad as the business world, or hiring, training and managing a staff, or any of the other miserable aspects of a conventional job.

It just isn't a waterslide or a golf course. It's a JOB.

Oh well.

Odd.

I was only saying that the word "play" should infer that there is a competition of some sort involved, and that the way we keep score at the poker table is MONEY. This is what makes the game have a point.

I suppose if you play for matchsticks, you might be said to be playing for "fun," but ultimately, you're always playing for whatever you consider important, be it money or pride or prestige or cigarettes (should you find yourself incarcerated, God forbid).

Are you saying that you play just for the sheer love of playing?

Because if this is true, I envy you.

I'd probably spend most of my time in Canterbury's $6/12 game but with more emphasis on drinking. I'd also make a couple of trips out east each year to play some high-limit stud.

Why? I just don't get this. If money is not a concern, then why are you caring about it? Who cares if you lose money, it doesn't matter! What the intial post was getting at imo was what poker games are the most fun. Obviously most of us play the most profitable, not the most fun. But if profit didn't matter to you(you had so much money that an extra 50 million or so is useless), then which games would you play just for the sport of it.

I dont play primarily for profit I get my "buzz" out of winning whatever tournament I have entered, so like in my comment I would still get the buzz out of playing the £100 rebuy tournament(and winning) down the local casino but I just dont think I would when I could play the best in the world without a concern.

Golf is much like poker in that they both can be very mentally taxing if you play too much, or take the game too seriously.

I too would play the tourney circuit and the monster PL/NL that seem to follow around with them.

They always play at resorts, which are almost always coupled with great golf courses. /images/graemlins/grin.gif
