Odds are basically a ratio... let's talk about a gut shot straight draw to the nuts. On the flop, you have 4 outs. There are 47 unseen cards (52 cards in the deck minus your 2 cards minus the 3 flop cards). The ratio of bad cards to good cards (your odds) are 43:4, or 10.75-1. That's why the odds of turning your straight are 10.75-1. This means, for your odds to be correct, you'd need to win 10.75 bets for every bet that you put into the pot.

Now let's say there are 18 small bets in the pot. It costs you 1 bet to call. the pot is giving you 18 bets for your 1 bet. your pot odds are 18-1. Since you're getting 18 bets and you only need 10.75, you should call.

let's say now that it costs you 2 bets to call. Your pot odds are now 18-2 (which is the same as 9-1), since you're risking 2 bets to win 18 bets. You can still call, because you can expect to make up the difference between the 18 bets the pot is offering on your 2 bets and the 10.75*2 = 21.5 bets you need to win to make the call correct. so if you win 21.5-18 = 3.5 small bets on the turn and river if you hit a straight, then you can go ahead and call. the difference that you expect to make up are your implied odds.

now let's say that it costs you 3 bets to call. your pot odds are now 18-3, or 6-1. Since you need 10.75 for each bet you invest, and the pot's offering you only 6 bets for each bet you put in, you shouldn't call, because the difference you need to make up is too big. in other words, your implied odds aren't big enough.
