the game is n/l texas holdem. very loose. plays basically like limit b/c no one does any extordinary bets. just bet cal call call.

alright i know the obvious answer is patience but i am at a table where if i sit out too many hands i will just end up being eaten up by the blinds and/or become last in the chip lead and then it is just a matter of time till i go broke. i mean i played tonigth and the only hand i won was with ace king. i played for probably and hour and a half and i was getting jack 2, and queen 4, and 8,6, and 6,3. i mean in that hour and a half thats all i got. is there anyway to work around this. i can't bluff at pots b/c either a)they are too loose and won't care or b) i have less chips then everyone else it isn't much to them. i mean i can't really wait it out b/c as stated before i just keep hurting myself. is it just not
my night or is there something i should be doing.

It's just not your night. Wait it out, that's why you have a bankroll.

When your stack starts getting smaller in the tournament you have to start getting in some hands and seeing some flops. I usually try to limp in against the shorter stacks and steer clear of the larger stacks. Wait until there are tight players in the blinds and toss out a raise with crappy cards. Sometimes this will work. You really need to be aggressive to win many of these. That J3 could flop two pair and win a nice pot. Not everyone that raises or limps has AK, AQ or a pocket pair. Go ahead and stick that shorter stack all in once or twice with a few limpers ahead of you. Either you get a coin flip type of situation or you might pick up all the limpers chips. You might limp in with a weak holding and go all in on the flop with 2nd pair trying to pick up the pot. You might lose but at this point you need to gain some chips to keep playing.

Basically if you wait to long to play in a tournament or are waiting for two good starting cards you will get blinded to dead. Not a good situation. You must start making plays at pots.

You fold a lot and lose money.

Try picking up pots where a lot of people have limped in with big raises from the blinds.

Fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, curse, fold, fold, fold, fold, curse, curse, fold....

I recall my second casino day ever. I sat through four dealers without seeing the flop but twice and never going farther than that. Just before the fifth dealer left, I won a small pot. I lost fairly little, and eventually the cards turned sunny again. Still, over two hours without a pot is pretty annoying. Given that I've only six days of casino play under my belt, I imagine others have gone much longer.

Sounds like a home tournament. I bet you didn't get more than 40 hands.

1 - You shouldn't expect to get a large number of good starting hands in such a small sample.
2 - If you get mostly crap hands like you did, you shouldn't bust out of the tournament within 40 hands...
2a - unless the starting stacks are too small and/or the blinds go up too fast. If this is the case, then expect to go through lots of losing streaks, since these tournaments are even more of a crapshoot than normal.

I'll bet these starting stacks are absolutly tiny. I virtually always find unexperienced home games to be this way. [censored], I saw a single table tourney last weekend with starting stacks of 15 big blinds!

That's exactly what I was thinking.

How did you pick up on that so fast?(Have you seen it more than once? /images/graemlins/blush.gif)

i got there about an hour before they started and looked at the stacks, 100 chips with 5-10 blinds. I got them to change the stacks to 2000 chips with 5-10 blinds. needless to say, it was much longer and much more fun.

There are two things you should be doing...
1) Folding those hands
2) Observing the rest of the players

Did you try a bluff? Sounds like the table is very passive, and no one is taking the lead

A couple of bluffs might have bought you another few rounds of blinds to get that better hand.

Or were all bets of any size getting called down?
