Okay --- This is probably a really stupid question, but it's something I really don't know. Conventional wisdom says that you need a 300bb bankroll to play at a certain limit. People can squabble over the actual number, but that is irrelevant to my question.

Let's say I have exactly 300bb for a bankroll. My first session is horrible and I lose 50bb. Now I only have 250bb. Does this mean I should drop limits? The whole point of 300bb is that it will allow for swings. If you swing down, you no longer have the necessary roll to continue.

I'm pretty sure I'm not thinking about it correctly. Could someone help.

Thanks!

The 300BB rule is if you already *know* that you are a winning player. If that's the case, then you should be able to confidently stay at that level, even with initial losses, and have a very minimal chance (5%) of going broke.
The problem is most people don't know and are simply taking their shot at the next level because they know they are a winning player at their current level. In this case it's common to employ a stop-loss limit of around 200BB. So if you start off losing, you can always drop levels (where you know you are a winner) and build back up to 300BB and give it another shot.

bankroll will always be an individual decision. I think I'm a winning player at the 15, so I would keep playing there until my BR drops all the way to 100BB, at which point I'd switch to the 10/20 6 max. This is aggressive - for two reason, I'm definitely a risk taker, and I also can afford to replenish if necessary.

I would move down if I got knocked down to 300BB at the next lower limit. This would be around a 100-150BB loss.

The fact that you can, and are willing to, replenish suggests that your true "bankroll" isn't the 300bb that dropped down to 100bb.

agreed - my point is simply that there are a number of different factors that go into bankroll considerations. using the 300BB rule of thumb should simply be a starting point.
