I've been reading the Dr. Tharp chapter in the book Market Wizards. Asked, "What are the characteristics of the losing trader?", he answers:

"- highly stressed and has little protection from stress

- has a negative outlook on life and expects the worst

- has a lot of conflict in his/her personality

- blames others when things go wrong

- tends to be disorganized and impatient. Wants action now."

Looks like the losing poker player to me!

Sounds like a player on tilt...

Hmm.... sounds like we've found ourselves a maniac.

I agree with everything on the list though, these are all definite negatives for winning poker. Good post.

So the question is; does the opposite apply to a good trader/poker player?

- Doesn't get stressed out easily (understands variance and the long run)

- Has a positive outlook and expects the best

- Has little or no conflict in his personality

- Doesn't blame other people when things go wrong (posts a hand on 2+2 and asks "did I play this correctly")

- Very organized and patient (you have to be patient if you are only going to see ~20% of all flops...lol)

Sounds like the makings of a good player to me.

I believe a good player should expect great things to happen but should also be prepared for the worst. Being ready for things to go wrong will leave you with a shorter fall, and shorter falls do not hurt as much (i.e. no tilt).
