View Full Version : Sharing cost on custom Egyptian chip set

TenPercenter

I've had three people approach me for piggy-backing on the Egyptian set (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=909888&page=0&view=co llapsed&sb=5&o=365&fpart=1#909888) I've been working on. Take a look at them (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=909888&page=0&view=co llapsed&sb=5&o=365&fpart=1#909888) if you are also interested in "going in" with us on this set.

What this would do is bring down the cost of the chips lower than my $.80 per chip, and it would let us share the art costs, which are considerable.

PM me or give your thoughts here. I'll let you know what the costs breaks are when I give a call to Chipco.

It's an interesting idea. Can you estimate what the new chip cost would be? Are we talking something like .70/chip still or more like .50?

I'll update this post when I get that answer from Chipco. I've asked them for cost break points at 2000, 5000, and 10,000 chips.

Let me get a quote from Chipco about price breaks and art charges. More to come.

It looks good, I've gotten three more responses.

I'd consider it. It really depends on the price break, and how many people we can get to split the art costs.

I would need a $1 chip, but I am thoroughly impressed and would be interested as well. FANTASTIC artwork all around and I wouldn't change a thing!

These are gorgeous! Add in a $1 chip, too, and I'd definitely be interested in an order. If a $1 chip isn't feasible, I'll have to think about it a little more as $1 are pretty essential for my needs.

If the price is right, I'd order some. I don't currently use $1 chips in my home game, but would like some to complete my set / make my set more versatile.

Anxiously awaiting quotes from Chipco...

Add me to the piqued interest list -- but i'll need to see price breaks before I can give a better answer.

I know this may sound strange or paranoid but I would want a list of people who went in on the chips after their final production and whereabouts in the U.S. they lived. Just in case, possibly, who knows, someone tried to smuggle in outside funds. My home games have a lot of rotating cast and you never know, you know?

Reply from Chipco:

Greg,

Ok, here is where it might get confusing. You got your order in before August 1. So I am going to be working off the old pricing information.

1,000 chips: 80c each: $800.00
Shipping trays for 1,000 chips: $24.00
Set up charges for current designs: $740.00
Ground shipping for 1,000 chips would be : $20.45

If you order 5,000 chips the price per chip would be 76c each. If you order 10,000 chips the price per chip would be 72c each.

VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those above prices will be for your first order ONLY!!!!! The prices have now gone up. So if you reorder these chips, the price per chip will be $1.10.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Jodi

[/ QUOTE ]

This means that to add the $1` chip it'll be $185. Then we can get better pricing per chip for THIS ORDER ONLY! I got my order in before August 1st, so any new order after this is jacked up!

Ten

It looks like there's definately enough interest to make this happen. At 10,000+ chips it's 72c each. At 5000 chips we get them for 76c. We split all other costs on a "per chip" basis. There will be $925 in art charges, $185 for each chip. This is a good price, I've gotten them down some on the art. Then shipping and chip trays (no way around that).

For me alone, it'll be $1500+ for my set as is. Getting your own 5-chip custom set, at the the new prices, it'll be $2,000.00+. If 5 people go in, at 1000 chips each, it'll be about $925 each set. At 10 people, 1000 chips each, it'll be around $856 for each set.

Next step, logistics.

I'll be collecting the money, and I'll be making the order. I'll be sending out the chips to the participants.

What I need now is ideas on how to get the money to me, in a way that everyone trusts.

I propose that we have a signed document drafted that each one of the participants can sign and SEND to my address, and I will sign and mail it back to each. That'll confirm my address and it will provide a contract of sorts.

I'm 100% open to other ideas, this was just off the top of my head.

In the meantime, EVERYONE PM ME that truly wants to do this. PM me with your real email address. Then I will email you will ALL my info: Address, phone, cell, fax.

Some poeple are saying like "500 to 800" so I am only counting the low end. If everyone gets the high end then we are almost to 5000!

We are now sharing the art costs between 6 people, so it's now at about $155 each! That's incredible! Now, we need to get 5000+ chip to drop our price another $.06 per chip, but the major savings is in the art!

I have now ordered the $1 chip design. We are in line right behind the Palms Casino for that design; Our artist is working on a Playboy set for them. He LOVES working on our design, but I guess "naked chicks on chips" is a priority? Go figure. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Hi. Great job. Here's a quest... My friends and I run a bunch of local tournaments with friends and we need $1000 and sometimes $5000 chips as well. While certainly not the high quantity we'd need of the others, we'd need some... Any suggestions on how to address that need without killing the artist?

Does Chipco make just a generic 1k and 5k chip or maybe just some simple artwork aka just the numbers in an egyptian font?

Thanks.

Schwachs, let me see if I have your straight: You want in on our order, with 1000-2000 quantity of the existing chips, $1 through $500.

In addition to that, you're intertested in $1000 and a $5000 chip to fill your set?

If this is correct, I have the perfect solution. Let me know if I am understanding what you want.

Yeah, depending on final cost, it would be 1000 chips (or possibly 2000). I want to check w/ the others in our group to see who else would be interested. And yes, we'd like some $1k and $5k chips to complete it for tournament use.

Great. Here's what I suggest. Get in on our order first. That way you'll get the mega-reduced pricing for the custom set we are doing, $1, $5, $25, $100, and $500. You cannot get stock design Chipco's for as cheap as our custom order will be!

Then order the other chips that you need seperately. I'll give you written permission to use the Egyptian theme for a new $1000 and a $5000 chip. They'll charge you $185 x 2 for the designs.

That's what I would do. I wouldn't use their stock designs, because you lose the security of unique designs, especially on your biggest chips!

Look for an email from me to confirm your address.

Woohoo! If I go with the minimum everyone said, we are over the 5000 mark! If everyone gets the high end of their estimate, we'd be at 8600 chips!

So as of now, we are getting chips for .76 cents each. Then we have the art charge of $925 split between 5150 chips, so about .18 each. So your order, if you are "in" with us, would be .94 each, plus shipping!

Let's go for 10,000!!!! That'll get us another .04 cents off immediately, not to mention the even lower art charges...

Ten

TenPercenter
08-16-2004, 11:26 AM
We've got eight confirmed, and four more who haven't given 100% commitments. Of the committed, we’ve got 5,150 chips. That gets us another price break, and it’s good. To get another price break, we need 10,000+ chips.

As of now, the art fee of $925 is shared between eight of us (average order 600), bringing the art cost to about $116 each (.18c per chip). This is phenomenal for five superb unique faces.

Here’s the breakdown of costs:

Art cost: $ 925.00
Chip cost: $ 0.76
Shipping: $ 0.04
Trays: $ 0.02

Price per chip: $ 1.00

That $1 per chip is to GET THE CHIPS TO YOUR DOOR! Chipco is charging me $21 for 1000 chips shipping, I’m assuming double shipping to divvy them up and ship them out from here once I get the order.

I’m sending an email to the current people, getting third confirmation. Anybody who wants in, contact me now!

We got another member, who wants "700-1000." 700 brings us down to .98 cents per chip, DELIVERED!

If the "not so committed" people would commit, we'd have over 10,000 to order, and we'd be around .87 cents delivered!

Ten

Oski

You should include a section where the buyer acknowledges that s/he has seen the templates and is satisfied with such. You need to make it clear this is a custom order and no returns can be possible, unless, of course, the chips are somehow defective.

If you want more specific language, look at the order form for your chip set. It should have all the customary disclaimers, etc. You can copy this "boilerplate" language into your own contracts with the other buyers.

I wrote up the agreement last night. I've sent it to Kevin, one of the buyers, since he offered to help with the verbiage. Once he looks it over I can send it to each of you.

Note: We need to set a deadline and stick to it. All of us are anxious to get this order filled. It takes four weeks to make the chips once we order, and I figure ten days shipping between them-to-me, then me-to-you. Please expedite the order form and your payments once I send the document.

Note: I urge everyone to order the MAXIMUM amount of chips that they can! Based on my spreadsheet, each 500 chips ordered will bring ALL OUR PRICES down another penny-per-chip! If we hit the 10,000 mark, we'll get another .04 cents off, in addition to all the other savings. It makes a big difference! This is a once in a lifetime chance, the prices are going up and they won't be back! Better get matching chips for cheap while you can!

Note: Please, if you have not yet corresponded with me via EMAIL, not just the 2+2 forum, then you must do so right away! Although we want to share the order with as many as possible, we cannot wait around for you! PM me your email address so I can approve you!

ORDER FORM (http://brakingpoint.com/crozier/chip.html)

We've put an order form online, to get a final commitment before the final agreement goes out. What this will do is get a more accurate final count before I print the agreement. That way I can insert the lowest price possible without risking too much fluctuation from people that back out (hopefully no one).

<ul type="square">
Figure out how many chips you want for each design. Check at the following website to get good advice on amounts. Generally, you want 500 for 10 person tourneys, and 1000 for 20 people. You can get by with less chips by buying higher amounts of the higher denominations.

http://www.homepokertourney.com/chips_needed.htm

Visit the online form and place your order. Order as many as you can now! If you order more later, you will pay at least double!

http://brakingpoint.com/crozier/chip.html

If you are choosing PayPal, then make sure you are allowed to send the amount that you want to send! When the deadline comes, we don't want to lose your order if you are over your PayPal limit!

Call or email me with any questions! I want everyone to be completely comfortable with the order!

Everyone's been asking this. All I can tell you is what I plan to do. Your own mileage may vary...

I figure on playing lots of 10-20 person tourney's, with T1000 buyin. We won't need the $1 for those, probably not even the $500. If I start hosting 20-30 person tourney's, I can add in the $500's for later color-up rounds, no problem. And for EVEN BIGGER ones, I can add those $1 chips in as T$1000 chip in later rounds.

For dealer's choice games, I can use the $1, 5$, and $25 as face value, and I'll have enough for ANY home game that I can foresee in my life ($82,000). If I need more than that in real money, I can friggin afford the $2 per chip price tag and buy more, right?

Or more realistically, I can make the 1% face value, so they would be penny, nickel, quarter, dollar, five dollars. That would give us $1000 real money buyins for family home games. That will take care of inflation and the chips are fine for 20+ years from now.

Or make them 10% face value, and we'd have $10,000 buyins, (that should get me into the next decade vs. inflation).

<ul type="square">
$1-----100 8%
$5-----400 33%
$25----400 33%
$100---200 17%
$500---100 8%
total--1200 100%
[/list]

(Yes, I've upped my own order by 200 more chips :-) ) ... We're at 7,000 now...

One member asked about using an escrow service for their chip order. I thought it was a great idea for whomever wants to use it. I have used escrow before, long ago, as an eBay seller.

I'll set up a transaction for anyone that want to use it. We'll use http://escrow.com who is the only eBay sanctioned escrow service.

http://pages.ebay.com/help/confidence/payment-escrow.html

Let me know if you want to place your order this way. It'll cost between $25 and $35 for most of you. ( calculator (https://www.escrow.com/support/calculator.asp)) It allows you to pay for your order in more ways, like credit card or bank transfer. More than I can accept anyway.

More to come. I have a tournament to go to tonight... wish me luck. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

If everyone pulls through by Monday (the deadline) then the pre-shipping price sits at .87 per chip. Compare that with $2.03 per chip for this set if you bought 1000 on your own!

Again, deadline is Monday only if you use escrow.com or paypal. Other wise it's already too late for new members.

Would there be a bigger price break with 10,000 more? How much cheaper from China? Can we depend on the quality?

curious - have you priced these overseas? Production costs are usually MUCH cheaper. I have several companies I use. Please let me know if these are still available and if you want me to price from China.

[/ QUOTE ]

As enticing as it seems, I see can't give $10,000+ of my personal dollars to a company in China and then cross my fingers. Maybe if I was a reseller I could take that chance, but this shared order is for our personal use. I want reliable service and quality for this deal. Chipco is certainly reliable and trustworthy; They make the actual chips for casinos around the world. All I know about Chinese poker chips is, well... I don't know much.

We're getting an incredible price for these Chipco chips because A) We got the order in before their prices went up, and B) We're ordering so many at one time that we share the art price to almost nothing and get price breaks on the chips too.

With your 10,000 added on to what we're ordering already, our pre-shipping price per chip would be around .79 to .80 per chip.

I don't mind either... i am going to be taking a trip on the 21st of October and we are planning on having a poker night one evening. I would really love to have them before I leave.

I'm really regretting only getting 400 chips. I think I should have gotten 100 more /images/graemlins/frown.gif. Still... 400 should be fine for 90% of the uses for me. I can't wait to get them! Great work TenPercenter on this job.

The alum case I have is crap. It holds 500 9g clays, and it's falling apart even tho its brand new. The felt dividers on the inside already gave out. The top edge where the handle is attached is trying to come loose when you pick up the case.

My oak case has lasted years, so damage. It also holds 500 9g chips, with all kinds of other stuff under the trays (cards, cut cards, booklets, etc.). The new cherry cases I bought are just like the oak case, with five removable trays.

How durable are the wooden ones with respect to scratches and the wood getting chipped (horrible pun, I know)? They look great and all but I wouldn't want to buy one and have it get all messed up in the act of actually using it as a travel case. Basically, I just want something sturdy that will last as a travel case and not just a container -- looking good would be nice but isn't a necessity.

The oak case is pretty scratched up, now that you mention it. If you are getting seperate cases, get this really nice 750 case for home (http://www.5stardeal.com/deals/10Picture.asp?pc=10-PC750) and then get the $15 vinyl cases that hold 300 each. I received these cases. I'm pretty disappointed. The color ended up being a VERY bright red, not a mohogany reddish brown color I expected. The quality is medium to low. One of the latches has already had a pin fall out. I'll probably keep them, just to hold all my old cheap chips, since the alum case is now pretty shot.

I'm going to once again try to find good 500 peice carousels for my Egyptian chips. Any leaqds on these will be appreciated.

UPS is good if you are shipping a total of over 100 lbs. They have a discounted rate at that level. I am not certain, but you should be able to send to multiple destinations.

I used this to move from Norfolk to Chicago once - about $2k cheaper than interstate movers. How's that for EV?

Doh... really poor math... they would be around 14 to 26 lbs. my bad. UPS is your best bet still.

hustalasta
10-01-2004, 01:37 PM
Its really going to depend on what area you are in. I suggest checking pricing at the websites for UPS, Fedex, USPS. I also highly suggest you package your items very well. UPS requires a package to be able to withstand a 6 foot fall, I suggest your packaging be able to withstand a 6 foot slam into the ground. Lots of bubble wrap and such otherwise any insurance you might take on the package will most likely end up null and voided. It is very hard to get the shipping companies to pay a claim, they will always blame the packaging.

Also if the service you use has guaranteed delivery make sure you follow up with delivery dates. UPS, and probably other services, often do not make residential deliveries on time. I have been credited the Freight Charges on more than one occasion when they delivered a day late.

I love my new cases, but each row of 75 chips leaves some space at the end. This annoys me to no end, since it makes checking for missing chips actual work. My Chipco's will fit 78 to a row, but I need them to fit 75. That means I need something to take up the space of EXACTLY 3 CHIPCO's. That's the thickness of three Chipco chips. I have 20 rows, so I need 60 blanks.

I've asked Chipco for 60 "duds" or blanks, or misprints, or something, but I doubt they'll oblige. What else do you suggest? How about those little acrylic disks that casinos use for separators? Are those exactly the thickness of a chip? (I doubt it)

I've found that I can use 60 acrylic spacers for what I need. I can get them for .25 each at 5stardeal, but shipping kinda kills the deal for an order that small.

Anyone know of a 20% off code, or better yet a free ship code? I have "travel" which is 10% off, and "SHIP" which is free shipping for $100+ orders.

Sorry i dont have any codes for you but, I'd be willing to do a group buy on these if it helps. I am looking to get 80 of them.

Also, if you end up doing a rebuy on your custom chips would it be possible to order a small quantity (like 1 each)? As you know im working on my own theme set, but I wouldent mind owning a "sample" of your chips cuz i like collecting them and yours really looked to turn out great.

What about using a 1½" wooden dowel cut to the right thinkness... should be easy to cut them all the same with a mitre saw &amp; stop... (1.5" = 36.8 mm)

Guys, I am talking to Chipco now to see if they will allow reorders at my price ($.76) instead of the new price ($1.10). Several original members are sorry they ordered so little, but I won't mention who (sprmario /images/graemlins/smile.gif). I'll let you know what they say.

Ten

[/ QUOTE ]

This was a no-go. Chipco wants $1.10, full price. Once I get to the point that I can add more denoms, I'll open up again for people to add-on the original order (and all the original guys of course). The orig members will not have to pay anything for the old art since they already paid. All new art will be split between members in that new order. With enough people, we'll again get a quantity discount.

This won't happen for quite a while (months, year?). I can't squeeze any more credit from my AMEX. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

haha... well when we did the original order my poker bankroll was about $400. So ordering $400 on poker chips was quite the extravagant expense. Yes, that's the one. Weigh the difference in the high shipping on ebay vs a higher price and FREE shipping on the site. Free ship code for them is "ship". And a 10% off code is "TRAVEL". I bought two, so my shipping was 50% off on the second one, making ebay the better way to go.

How well does the chipco proof compare to the final product?
Looking at the picture the only things I notice are the black lines are a bit thinner, and the $500 chip losses a lot of depth.
Any other concerns on the differences?

I really feel that they could not have done a better job. I am actually surprised that they came out so close to the proofs. I think i see what you mean about the $500 chip, but keep in mind the flash of the camera washed it out a little. I had really wanted that Nefertiti photo to be "dumbed down" a bit, to match the clipart style of the other artwork. It was my least favorite chip because it stood out from the others, but EVERYONE else loved it most. Any of you other members feel different? I think most of you have your chips now...

Once we add a $1000 and a $5000, we'll use art that is closer to the real thing, kind of representing "higher value" for the higher chips. The 25¢ chip will have more "wall art" type of art on it.

I'm very interested in making the $5000 a plaque. Maybe even make the $1000 an octagon. This will play havoc with chip storage though. Unless I can fit then nicely into the two Laquer Finish Poker Chip Case's (http://www.5stardeal.com/deals/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=10-PC750) I have. Not likely though.

Here are Chipco's Chip/Plaque sizes:

I've commissioned the design of three new denoms for this set. We'll see what they look like before I make any decisions on going further at this time. The 25¢ will be the standard 39mm, and I'm thinking about the 44mm octagon for the $1000 and a big, French looking, plaque for the $5000 peice. We'll see.

I figure the plaque will cost around $5 each, so that may not be the way to go.... but DAMM it would be cool. /images/graemlins/smile.gif Think of the Egyptian designs that could be done on a plaque....
