View Full Version : Defining Poor Game Selection -- A Short Trip Report

On Friday night, I had the pleasure of having dinner with many 2+2ers. In my opinion, this is as close as you can get to poor game selection. Luckily, it was only dinner, so I still had +EV! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dinner included Joe Tall, Tommy Angelo, Kurn son of Mogh, Dr Savage, SFer, Johnny Boom Boom, The Grifter (and his brother who is a lurker here), me, and Daryn.

It was great to finally meet Tommy, Kurn, and SFer. It was also good to see everyone else again. I tried to coax Tommy into posting a trip report, and figured I'd give him a thread to post to.

Regretfully, Fossilman couldn't make it to dinner this time. Maybe next time.

Looking forward to the next get together.

Correctly identifying Jim Grey is +EV. It was great to meet you, and everyone else, Joe.

Great time. Great people. Great food (raw clams and nearly raw beef - what more could a Klingon want? /images/graemlins/wink.gif). Intelligent conversation. The Jim Gray sighting. And Tommy's take on the AA hand you posed was pretty good, too.

"I tried to coax Tommy into posting a trip report, and figured I'd give him a thread to post to."

Arrived at Abby's bread and breakfast on Thursday evening with my betrothed. We walked from there to Foxwoods, an easily paced half hour.

I knew it would be big there, and I'd seen big lots of times before, but I still wasn't quite prepared.

We covered the whole grounds and she played slots for the first time and I said watch this, here's how to get the max out of this casino.

She'd never played roulette either, but she totally gets all gaming and investment and house edge stuff in it's various forms, so when I told her that if we played at a $5 roulette table, it would cost us .25 per spin to order free drinks, she got it.

I said the key was waiting until a waitress was approaching the very table you are going to play at, and then quickly sit, buy in, and order. We found a totally empty $10-min table, with no waitress in sight, we played three spins outside the line, lost 'em all, and resumed exporations.

Walked back to our cozy little place in the countryside, and next morning she drove away and I stayed behind.

I went to the poker room and played $5-5 blinds no-limit for a couple hours and $20-40 for an hour. I lost $300 at NL and I won $200 at $20-40.

Walked home, rested, wrote, restarted, and back to the poker room at 7:00 PM. Played $20-40 and lost a stack I think. (I was keeping track of total-trip score only.)

Then came the wonderful dinner with you and the rest of us! More poker after that and I had a good groove going that session for the first time. I really felt I had a good line on the culture around the $20-40 tables and how best to exploit it.

Asleep by 2:00 AM ish and up feeling great at 8:00 and full morning awakening and into the poker room at around 10:00.

Met rory at the start of a $20-40 game, and later other people and I hope you don't mind me not mentioning names or handles because A, I can't possibly remember them all despite my desire too, and B, I'm a little bit over-private when it comes to other people's whereabouts and such sometimes.

Played $20-40 and took long breaks to bla-bla all day, took a long break at the B&B in the afternoon with a total restart, then a long (six-hour) and well-grooved evening session. Final score was plus 2K.

I'm racing through all that part to get to this part. You, Joe, thank you so much for the welcome. It was a thorough and lasting delight to meet you and so many other wonderful poker people. If I take any negative home with me, it will be that the sour disposition of the players at the table, on average, compared to back home, left me with something of a gut gnaw several times. But the 2+2 crew was without question removed from that norm. It was all over your faces which I can still see.

Yes, most Foxwoods regulars are, without a doubt, the most miserable SOBs you'll ever meet. I have no idea why.

I had a great time meeting Tommy and sfer for the first time. Too bad Johnny Boom Boom had to tag along, his table manners are horrible. Nice finally talking with Kurn for a while as we have only briefly crossed paths before.

Great converstaion, great meal and new friends; very much enjoyed it.

Peace,
Joe Tall

Live everyone else, I had a great time. I enjoyed meeting daryn, Kurn, Tommy and The Grifter and seeing some old favorites, and JoeTall. The games were riciculously good. I feel I am a stronger player from when I was last there, 3 months ago, and that I better took advantadge of the games.

Hope to see everyone again soon, and if you're ever in NYC...

My feeling as well. Too bad the Sox didn't cooperate. /images/graemlins/frown.gif

If you think that they're bad, go to the Borg' they are the most miserable bunch of poker players that I have ever seen.

Sorry that I missed the gathering, but I had a wonderful time cruising the coast of Maine.

Is there a place where poker players aren't miserable?
