You HAVE to bet the river, otherwise you cannot win the hand.

i do not agree with this statement, take the free showdown, if he does not have a hand he is not calling your river bet, if he has any piece of the board and had any intention of folding he would have already, betting this river is -EV, check and call if you think he will bluff at it

I play it like you did and I call if he bets the river, but I call too much with ace high in these situations. I guess I have picked off some bluffs with it in my day, and the pot is big. But I don't see the busted draw he could have here.
