View Full Version : Drunken 2+2 game at Excalibur: aka The Magoo Report!

The game at excal went down last night as planned. We decided to play 2-6 instead of 1-3 for the primary reason that we knew we'd have to pay rake either way, and we wanted wheel spins and jackpots, plus it was a little more interesting at 2-6. However, no one spun the wheel during the game (tho I did two times later that night) and no one hit the jackpot. Actually, I think playing 1-3 would have been better because the 2+2 Magoos would have played even stupider-er and looser with only a $1 blind! Next time!

The Magoo Roster last night:

Howard Burroughs
Gonores
FSUPlayer
Al Capone Junior
Trillig
Bonanz
Turkish

The house gave us a choice of starting a new private game, or just filtering us into the same table as seats opened up. Viva Excalibur's poker room management for giving us excellent treatment and service!

We wound up filtering all seven of us into the same table, as there were five seats open all at once at one table. The other three seats were filled with some fishy types. One man, the guy on my left, was actually a pretty decent player, and was a real nice guy too. He was a good sport to stay at a table full of sharks! We all had little nametag placards in front of us so we would remember names and 2+2 handles. Another player, one of the fish, actually wanted a nametag too, so he became "Brian #2."

Here are some of the tales from the felt from the game:

Gonores and the "32s incident"

Keep in mind for this one that the game had just started and Gonores had not even had ONE beer yet!

There was lots of straddles in this game, and on this hand, I was the straddler ($4). Bonanz opened for a raise and made it $10 to go. Gonorez cold called the ten bucks and I (begrudgingly) folded my J5o. Heads up pot.

The flop was Js 5d 6d. I was like "D'oh!" Bonanz bet $6 and Gonorez raised, Bonanz reraised, and Gonorez "smooth called.".

The turn was some piece of crapola that didn't seem to help and isn't worth remembering. Bonanz bet and Gonores called.

The river brought an offsuit four. Bonanz was quite dismayed when he got raised. He was even more surprised to see Gonorez 3d2d! Ma-Goo!

Turkish's straddle and the four way cap

Well Turkish came to be UTG in this hand, and (naturally) posted a straddle. Gonorez raised to $10. FSU raised to $14. I am sitting there looking at AhKx. Hmmm... Well I know that Gonorez knows about the standard "raise the straddler" raise and I also know that FSU player knows that Gonores knows about this play, therefore FSU may just be reraising the standard "raise the straddler" play to re-isolate the isolator. Thus I called. In hindsight, this may have been over-thinking the matter on my part! Turkish also called and the pot was capped four ways.

The flop was J high rags with two hearts. Turk bet and all called.

The turn was a ten. Checked to FSU who bet, I called, Turk check-raised, Gonores dropped, FSU called, I called (d'oh! stuck on the installment plan! should have just dropped preflop!).

River was another ten. Turk bet, FSU called, I folded.
Turk had JdTd for the runner-runner full house. FSU had pocket kings.

Gonorez and FSU with the straddle and double straddle

In this hand, Gonores straddled and FSU double straddled to $8. It was folded to Howard, who made it $14, only FSU called.

The flop was AKx. Howard bet to the river. FSU called to the river. HB had AK and FSU just had a king with a rather cheese-ball kicker.

Howard Burroughs makes it $14 with ??

In this hand Trillig opened with a raise to $8. Howard reraised and made it $14. Heads up.

Flop was 56T. Trillig checked, Howard bet, Trillig folded. Howard proudly showed his 5h6h for the flopped two pair!

Capone vs. Bonanz in the ace high flop grudge match

Trillig open raised to $8, Bonanz called, and I "smooth-called" in the BB with AdKh.

Flop was A high rags with two clubs. Checked to Bonanz, who bet, I check-raised, Trillig thought a while and folded, Bonanz called.

Turn small club. I bet he called.

River small club. Chit. I bet, he folded after some thought. I showed my non-club pair of aces after taking bids for how much to show my hand! $1.50 was the high bid and I took the money!

Trillig's 53s straddle

Well Trillig straddled on one hand and was blessed with 53s. He flopped two pair and it held up. Straddles were the big winners in this Magoo-esque 2+2er game.

Howard falls asleep

I guess Howard hadn't had enough sleep lately, cuz at one point he almost fell asleep! I guess it was the shady spot behind his mountain of chips, good place to take a nap!

Capone and the limp-reraise preflop vs. FSU

In this hand I had JJ UTG and limped in. Gonores limped on the button and FSU made it $8 from the blind. I reraised to $14, Gonores folded and FSU called.

Flop was 8 8 Q (or something close to that). I bet and FSU folded his pocket nines. I showed.

Howard sucks out on the river

River suckouts were the name of the game in Magoo land last night. In this hand, Gonores opened to $8 UTG and Howard reraised him, heads up.

The flop was 3 5 K. Gonores bet and Howard called him.
The turn was a six. Gonores checked, Howard bet, Gonores check-raised, Howard called.

The river was a deuce. G bet, H raised, G called.
Howard showed down pocket deuces for the rivered set! G had two pair, sixes and fives! But he was sooooooted!

Bonanz sucks out on Capone for the split pot

Bonanz had open-raised to $8 and I called from the BB with AKo, heads up.

Flop was a beautiful QJT rainbow. I check-called.

Turn was a rag. I check-raised, B called.

River sucked major ASS. A king. We capped it. Doh. He had AQ and rivered my ass for the split pot! I cursed him and his children's children for all eternity!

Capone and the 72o special

Well, I had to play some hands loose, so on this one I limped in MP with 72o, a real winner of a hand. The pot was four or five ways. I said "I hope I get to show this one down."

The flop was A 4 J or something like that, all checked.

The turn was a five. I said "that is a great card for this hand!" (remembering the 32s incident, and hoping everyone else did too!). I bet six, everyone folded, and I showed my gutshot draw!

Overall, it was a great time and well worth the effort. I took somewhat of a beating in the game, down about $60, but no problemo. After the Magoos left, more (regular) magoos showed up, and I came back to the tune of +240. I spun the wheel twice, once with cracked aces, and once when I made a queen high straight flush. The total of my wheel spins was $80! I love the wheel!

Viva Excalibur for treating us right and generally providing a very well run and fun cardroom.

Anyone coming into town who wants to do this, PM me and I'll give you my number. It is a ton of fun and well worth the effort.

Having played more than 1500 hands online against Gonores I can safely say this is standard fare. I don't know which is least surprising though; whether it's his cold call with 32d, the flop action, or the fact he hit his draw he knew he was going to hit. They're all very routine for him. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Perhaps a private tournament might be in order. Depends on the demand and how many would be here. Perhaps the "Live in Vegas: Super-Genius Invitational Real Life Special"

I won't be there until the evening of Friday the 13th.. hopefully some of you will be out and about over the weekend so I can at least make up a good excuse as to why I dropped 4 racks in 2 hours at a 1-3 game. lol

Actually, it looks like I'll have to miss the game. I'm meeting a buddy for steak and the 51's baseball game that night. I'm sure I'll end up donating to several of you throughout the week, though.

I'll very likely be there again as well!

Wondering if it should be 5:30 due to our little meeting and rush hour traffic sometimes being a *cough* <expletives> mess... anyhow that's my excuse if I show up a tad after 5.... 8)
