View Full Version : First Hand Theoretical Question

First hand of a 1 (or 2, I dont think it changes things) table sit n go. UTG goes all, folded to you in the BB w/ AA. While you think, UTG turns over his cards, showing you KK.

Do you call?

At what buy in does it swing from a call to a fold? (For example, doubling up on the first hand of a $5 sit n go is far less helpful than on the first hand of a $500 one.)

I'd call every time, always no exceptions.

You couldn't ask for a better situation in the first hand.

If you can't make this call, you're playing at too high a limit.

Why does UTG showing me KK make any difference ? I know I'm a big favourite, he doesn't need to show me.

I made the mistake of thinking like that once, so I'll be nice and reply in a serious fashion:

It swings to a fold when UTG all ins, all 8 people call and you're in the BB with aces and a guaranteed second place. (Just barely, mind you. If only six people call you are pushing and it's not that close.)

Which two cards play best against AA?

I remember there being a discussion about this around 6 months ago, I remember the logic, just not the answer.

Thanks.

Against AA surely 56s, 67s and 78s all have the same equity.

So, has it been a week already since the last "Do I call all in on hand 1 w/ AA preflop???"

Tosh

Actually I believe its been 2 days. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

My question is genuine btw, I honestly don't see why those 3 hands have any difference in win rate vs AA..

I haven't read the other responses but I fold and wait for a better starting hand.

This came up earlier on the Poker Theory Forum. The reason I picked KK is that it's a better hand against AA than AK. Here's my arguement:

You go all in w/ AA vs KK and you win 80% of the time, you're out of the tournament 20% of the time. Of the 80% of the time you double up on the first hand, how much more do you win versus had you not doubled up?

I dont think your EV goes up 20% if you double up on the first hand, unless you're playing top notch players. When you're playing the average $50 and below players, you're better of waiting until 4 or 5 people have been eliminated and then getting your money in when a big hand puts you in the money.

This reasoning is ***SO*** wrong, I don't even feel like starting all over again to explain why, as it was discussed around these boards 3989837494213 times. However, if you really believe in what you're saying, and it isn't just some kind of a strange brain-twitch, you should probably quit poker, or at least stop seeing poker as a possible way of making ANY kind of money.

Let's say you lose half your stack on the first hand. Have you lost a significant amount of EV?

zephyr
08-04-2004, 05:38 PM
I think your EV would go up more than 20% if after doubling up you left the table and went into auto fold mode /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Lots of Smart(assed) replies to that one. But here's a question. What if it is a $1000 MTT? Does that change anyone's mind? If I am not mistaken I believe Sklansy says something about this in his book TPFAP.
Anyway, just curious.

OH YEA. CALL

No. Still call, preferably while laughing like a maniac.

I believe Sklansky's question deals with KK not AA huge difference.
