Too early in the tournament to really have a read.
I backed off because I was worried about the flush. Should I not have?

Well first of all I don't raise 77 in MP preflop in a STT with 8 players left. I play it to set this early.

That aside, I really doubt the BB was drawing to the flush, as he led out strong when the 3rd diamond fell. He is purposely representing the flush, or trying to push you off of a potential flush draw. I'd keep firing at him (raise to 500 ish on turn, push river if no diamond falls).

I very rarely see players lead out like that when they DO have the flush, and in the unlikely event that he does have it, you have a 10 outs to a boat. So don't slow down, and drag in that monster pot.

I think only a very low flush, trying to scare out a naked higher diamond might bet the turn that way; and most of the time, not even then. I say raise him on the turn.
