Smaller tourney, very tough quality field too. The fish turn up for no limit but never pot limit.

Still in the 1st hour, 15/30 blinds. I pick up JJ on the button and there's one somewhat loose limper. Blinds fold and the limper calls so it's HU to the flop of 8 8 8.

He checks and I bet 150 which he raises to 300. I call. Right now I have him squarely on 77-22. Turn is a 7 and he bets 540. I call. River is a 3 and now he checks. I'm fairly certain that my hand is best here. He has 1600 behind and there's about 1900 in the pot at this time. How much do you bet here? I bet 600 and he called and mucked.

Greg,

I never doubted it was justified exit. I just reported the fact as it probably was of public interest.

And as it was mentionned, it's probably just as fun looking at your bank account than playing yet one tournament /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Take care,

I don't think pot limit is often played with antes. I'm not sure why but I haven't seen it.

08-03-2004, 04:54 PM
Well for the record, I played in this one. And to vent my end was, I had the nut straight on the turn, all the money went in, and the river pairs the board giving the set a fullhouse, oh well not so exellent. good luck to anyone left.

Tosh

I wonder if its because it might be tougher to keep track of the pot in real games?

Also, it tends to defeat the purpose of pot limit if the pot is too large to begin with because of antes.

Tosh
08-03-2004, 05:24 PM
Yeah thats a good point.

Nottom
08-03-2004, 05:51 PM
Antes would inflate the pot a bit too much preflop and make it that much closer to NL.

Grivan, what did you have on that hand where the guy made broadway?

Grivan
08-03-2004, 07:46 PM
2 pair. It was a horrible call by me. I couldn;t beat anything but a pure bluff. Since the ace on the river made many 2 pair that beat mine. I didn't take the time to think about it though.

Meatmaw
08-03-2004, 07:48 PM
what does it mean to make broadway? I thought broadway referred to the set of cards T and up. Figure I'm wrong though.

Making broadway means Ace high straight, AKQJT.

He is Mike O'Malley, the consultant for Party Poker. He used to write for Card Player but I don't remember recent articles from him.

Made a play I'll regret for a while. I'm chipleader at table with roughly 70k blinds 2k/4k. All fold to me in mid position and I open for 12k with AKo. Fold to the BB who has 57k he reraises pot to 38k. First some background info I've been at the same table for the last 3 hours and have a fairly tight aggressive image and I believe the only 3 hands i've showed down were AA. The BB is a solid player who knows the way i play and respects my raises. With him reraising me pot like he did I really should have folded. But for some reason I pushed him all in and he flipped up KK and I did not catch my miracle and was crippled. This really sucks because I know I played the hand awful yet I still made the play. Instead of playing for 91k I went home with 1600. The only bright spot is there's always next time.

Man, I've never seen so many AA/KK hands in these final two tables. Like ten at least. Some have been cracked, like gank out in 11th when allin vs TT and a three flush flops. TT makes flush. That Kirill guy from Moscow who took 2nd in WPT championship a year ago saw his KK cracked by 54 when that hand made a straight. Another one with riverloser getting all-in with two other players. river had JJ vs AA vs 99. Nine on the flop kills the two better hands. Down to eight now with regular Stars player fabsoul the chip leader.

Uh oh, the eight handed deal talks are beginning...

La Brujita

Just was about to say Sooners comment was ridiculous, and Lee busted him on it.

Deal discussion very interesting.

Pluto was basically offered the 44k he wanted, no idea why he didn't take it. Anyone up watching?

Edit to say here is tail end of chat:

mikelevytu: lets go
fabsoul: pluto ur sure????
Sooners: bust him fab
Dealer: fabsoul, it's your turn. You have 15 seconds to act
Lee Jones [PokerRoom Manager]: Sooner - one more comment like that and you'll be in deep trouble.
Dealer: theory, it's your turn. You have 15 seconds to act
Sooners: yeah that stuff is never said on here
Sooners: im sorry
Lee Jones [PokerRoom Manager]: Thank you.

I hate the guy who gets offered a reasonable deal, and just has to try and chisel a couple extra bucks out of it. I hope he busts too.

La Brujita
08-04-2004, 01:14 AM
And in a classic move he busts out holding 44 vs aa all in preflop.

He basically cost himself about 23k.

I don't mind the not dealing what I don't like is not having the common courtesy to respond the first four times you are asked a question.

Grivan

I loved this tournament. Pot Limit hold'em is my favorite game, because my strategy from NL holdem doesn't change much, so it puts me at a greater advantage. People can not just push all in preflop and avoid actually playing. Since pushing preflop is something I try to avoid in NL this is a bonus to me. As for this tournament I didn't really get hit with the deck. I played for 8 hours and got AA once and KK once, but I doubled up with the AA and I tripled up with the KK, so I got lucky when I did have them. I only went all in twice preflop where i wasn't a huge favorite, and both times I was short stacked and both times I got lucky. The first time was AKo all in preflop against QQ and I caught the A on flop. The second time was once we were in the money the blinds were 2000/4000 I raised to 12000, and a shorter stack then me came back over the top all in for about 22000, I called with AQs and he had KK. I caught the A on the flop in that hand too.

To answer Brujita's question about why it was so long. It was a very tough field. I think the PL factor made it so there was a higher concentration of good players around once the field got cut in half. Especially in PL good players are less likely to go out to bad beats/coin flips early in the game. Some of the tables I played at were just brutal. You can see the one I was complaining about in this thread. I was rather dissapointed with 19th, but oh well try again on Sunday in the main event. I wish I knew how to play these other games well enough to participate in the events for stud and omaha, but I don't. Anyone want to teach me?

La Brujita
08-04-2004, 04:06 PM
The field looked extremely tough. Grivan (or others) would you care to try to explain the concept of building the pot before the hand? I know what it means and have read other threads on it but have not always been satisfied. The concept of pot building is something I am trying to get better at since I don't play that much pl.

Also, is there a theory behind the opposite concept, keeping the pot small?

I know implied odds and suitedness has a lot to do with these topics, and I wonder if AK vs AKs plays differently in pl vs nl.

I also wonder about medium pairs.

Best regards, and again congrats to both of you on your high finishes.
