Meaning Of A Smoked River Bet?

I'm guessing this has been discussed before, but when someone smokes (bets in the dark) a river bet are they generally seeking a call or trying to discourage a call?

It depends on the player. I play with a lot of hotheads sometimes and they love this move. It might be a way of acting strong when weak. But against avergae players this confidence to make such a play comes from a good hand. If you are at the table and anytime you can't decide what certain tells mean, its better just to forget you saw it and revert back to game theorey.
