If you go to Foxwoods a lot you know how hard it is to get a reservation at the Great Cedar steak house. Normally you need to call days in advance to lock up the time you want. Last night I found out that it is real real easy to get a table but I readily admit that it's not a novel idea.

Here's what happened. Went down on the spur of the moment with a buddy. His girlfriend and her friend were already there and he said they wanted us to join them for dinner at the Great Cedar.

I said, great, do they have reservations? He said, nope, they'll hang around the bar and grab some seats there as they become available and we can eat at the bar. Not ideal, but it was ok with me.

So we get there and they are at the bar hovering but no one is getting up. I asked the girls if they asked about a table and they said they were told it was a 3 hour wait. So I said, let me try.

So I walked up to the guy in the tux with a double sawbuck folded over discreetly in my hand and asked "is there anyway we can get a table right away". The guy did not miss a beat. He scooped my 20 out of my hand slid it over to the other guy in a tux standing benind the podium and said "of course sir, it'll be just a couple minutes, is that ok"?

I rounded up the others at the bar and when we go back he said "is a booth OK" and we went in and had a great meal. Now the whole time we're in there which is considerable, I observe about 15 to 20 empty tables.

Funny thing was that I didn't mind but maybe this was due to the fact that the girls were slots players with a gazillion points and they insisted paying for the meal with their points. As a lowly Poker player with about 55 points in my account, I was happy to oblige. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

This is amusing.

How fast do you accumulate points, anyway, and how do you know what they're good for? I haven't looked into that.

i think they give you 1/2 a point per hour.. how cheap.

1 point = $1, and you can use them pretty much everywhere at foxwoods, for everything.

I believe .5 points per hour is correct for 5/10 and lower and it goes up to, oh my god, 1 point an hour for the higher limit games. Poker players get the worst comps in the Casino.

And that's correct, the points can be used for virtually everything including the Hotel.

Back before tournaments got too polular, they had a low buy-in LHE tourney every Saturday morning and you get 10 points for registering.

Just some useless info. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Get an extra card and leave it in a slot machine.

Great idea but wouldn't you have to be super lucky to have the next person to play that same machine to be clueless and not know enough to pull your card and insert theirs??

Nope, happens all the time. A friend of my mom's gets a new card issued whenever she goes and just leaves it in a machine. She once came back to find something like $200 wampum bucks more than when she left the last time.

A lot of people will pick up cards and put them in the slot machines, figuring it's money back to the non-casino coffers, too.

What limit slots would you try this? I'm thinking high limit but won't those people be more apt to want to put their won card in?

They did this to compete with Mohegan, who offered a comp breakfast buffet with their weekend morning tournaments. Its too bad the CT area can't support more than one poker room. /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Toro:

About a year back, a food magazine ran a test in NYC on 20 restaurants with the rep of being impossible to get a reservation. The goal was to see if a discreet bribe to the Maitre'D worked and at what limit's. If my memory is correct, all but one were bribable. They even started the bribe at $20 bucks and worked their way up to $100 and a had a bunch of takers at $20.

Everyone has a price.

Gee, I'd like to get you started on Mohegan, because all I've heard is rumors and inuendo over why their poker room was shut down (allegedly by the gaming commission).

Judging from the crowds at Foxwoods, CT definitely has enough bidniss for two poker rooms, and I can't imagine that Mohegan would walk away from that goose just when it starts dropping gold.

that type of thing works so well in nyc it's silly. I bet maitre 'ds make a ton of money off stuff like that.

The comment made about that it was "too bad Connectitcut couldn't support two card rooms" was dripped in sarcasm. Just before Mohegan closed their cardroom they sent out letters to players informing us that the room was about to close and the reason they gave was that the area could not support two card rooms.

Rumors for the actual reason have run rampant which include sex among employees on the premises, stealing of rebuy money during tourneys and the only way they could can the manager because of his contract, etc, etc. But we all know it certainly was not because the area couldn't support 2 rooms. That's a joke. Foxwoods has greatly expanded their room and still can't keep up.

And the rumors of their impending re-opening keep falling through so no one is holding their breath.

Amazing.

The more I hear about Mohegan, the less I want to go there.

As for the Great Cedar Steak House:

Boy, I like that place. Thanks for the tip on.. giving the tip to get the table.

Last time I went there, I ended up seated at the bar. It was pleasant enough: I was trying to spend $100 on dinner, and ended up getting very poopie-faced, whilst humoring some older guy who was talking to me about horse racing and seven card stud. One of the best meals I can remember having in a long time.

Still, I'd prefer a table.
