Well, if you have to be there, I think the only poker room in town is at the Red Lion. I've never played there. The brief times I was there, no games were going. I think they have some low limit. A lady next to me in my game last weekend lives there. I think she said they had some games. I have heard they sometimes have (had?) a 2-10 stud game. That would be a trap for a bad player. Elko is not the most happening place. How is it you are ending up there? Work for a mining company or something?

My enduring image of Elko is roaming around an old casino (Cattleman's? Stockman's?) about midnight on a Saturday with about 30 people in the place. Some older ladies were playing a slot machine with cows on it where you could play 3 silver dollars and the jackpot was $100. When somebody hit the jackpot it would moo. Awesome.

That was about a dozen years ago, but I didn't see any poker games.

Is that the place with the stuffed polar bear?

I don't remember that part -- it was a surreal post-season bowling league party where our teammates no-showed for the bus ride. My wife couldn't even find a crap game at midnight on a Saturday.

Funny you should use the word surreal. You know, I have found Elko like that too. I get this bizarre feeling there even when nothing bad happens. Weird. I've never gambled a cent there. I went down there once to gamble with a friend and we both thought it was weird. We saw the stuffed bear and a downtrodden casino or two and turned around. Another time I had to go there to pick up some documents. I got a strange sense about things. I ate in the coffee shop at the Red Lion, made a phone call, and left. If I saw a slot machine that mooed I might have played. But I just ate the bad food and slid out. The people were always nice enough and I was treated just fine I have to say. So I can't pinpoint exactly why I think it's different.

We want a trip report Flats.

I believe their poker only goes on the weekend. Call the Red Lion and they should be able to tell you.

i am really looking forward to a trip report, maybe you'll be the start of a run on elko...lol...gl

I've seen those cheapy ads in the paper for Elko, but I've never taken the plunge. I had some friends make the trip a few years ago, and they had a good time, but they were all slot players.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Flats:

Your best bet is to head 111 miles East on I-80 to Wendover, NV. There are two poker rooms in town:

1. Silver Smith Casing & Resort 775.664.2231

2. Rainbow Casino

The bigger poker room is at Silver Smith, and on weekends it draws good crowd from Salt Lake City. It spreads both Hold'em and 7CS. I am afraid that Elko does not have large enough population base to hold a meaningful and lengthy game of poker.

In passing, on your way to Wendover do not stop in Wells, NV, for the ladies for love might storm you.

Good luck1

I go there a lot. If you think Elko sucks try Gabbs, Round Mtn. even Battle Mountain (which was named "Armpit of America" by the Washington Post. Battle Mountain brags about this on billboards in the area "...make us your PIT stop...")

Only Poker is at the Red Lion. 2-10 spread limit 7 stud most evenings, occasional HE.

EAT AT THE STAR. Best thing in Elko, a real gem. (I have no financial interest in this business, this is legitimate praise) Stunning filets and T-bones. If you order garlic with your steak you better REALLY like garlic...the first time I ate there I thought they were fried potatoes

The stuffed Polar Bear is in the Commercial casino, a real s**thole. Stay away from the Stockmans too.

I usually stay at the Hilton Gardens hotel, very nice, near new, Room service, good gym, good value.

And yes I AM in the mining business, not necessarily a bad thing and it has worked out very well for me, financially and otherwise.

"And yes I AM in the mining business, not necessarily a bad thing and it has worked out very well for me, financially and otherwise"

To be clear, I wasn't criticizing. I'm not exactly an Earthfirster or eco-mystic. The only old friend who has made it anywhere near my part of the country works for a mining company and had to go to Elko a lot. I never was able to hook up with him when he did, but the reason I asked about mining is that he was the only one I knew who ever traveled specifically to Elko. I think he mentioned the Star, but I didn't remember the name when I posted. I'll keep it in mind the next time I end up in Elko. But in Wells, Las Vegas is straight, Wendover is left. I just don't turn right too often.

Say, does anybody know how much it costs to rent a house around Austin, NV?

And what's the fastest Internet connection I can get around there, and how fast does it run?

Thanks,
