no particular order: (actually that's a lie, the first is my favorite, but the rest are in no particular order)

1. Pearl Jam
2. Rage Against The Machine
3. Soundgarden
4. Stone Temple Pilots
5. Smashing Pumpkins

also very high honorable mention goes to Audioslave, but they are a fairly new creation, so I didn't want to put them on the list, especially since the band exclusively contains members from 2 of my top 5 above. I do think they are the best band of this decade though.

I saw Cmdr Cody open for Hot Tuna at the Music Hall (now the Wang Center) in Boston in '72.

The first time I saw the dead, Pig was still (barely) alive.

Sure Midnight Oil seems out of place, but that's just because I thought Cmdr Cody would sound stranger than Concrete Blonde or Counting Crows.

How can you sleep when beds are burning, dude?

I like live Dead. As a musician I almost have to. But I've had the best shows hand-picked for me by a former bandmate, so I didn't have to wade through the assjuice to get the sweet, sweet wine. [/ QUOTE ] No offense man, but listen to NWA and then listen to Snoop, Post-NWA Dre, Post-NWA Ice Cube, Pac, Warren-G's first CD, the Dog Pounds first CD, Westside Connection, and if you honestly think NWA is the best west-coast gangsta rap then your a fool. NWA broke the ground, but their beats, rhymes, and production were simplistic. Dre changed everything once he went to Death Row. The production was sharp, the beats were funky and HARD. Huge drums man.... The whole death row camp made rap funky and hardcore, but also approachable. Some of those songs were absurdly cacthy, and the funniest thing is people were singing along to songs and not really realizing what they were saying.

From Snoops "whats my name"

Brinsley Forde vs. David Hines in a no holds barred match? I think it's a toss up. I like steel pulse too, and think they're the best at what they do, but I think Aswad is more versitile. I like the fact that they can sell out and still sound good, then go back to their roots and sound even better.

Uston
07-22-2004, 06:20 PM
You're right about that. Steel Pulse was truly horrible when they sold out. In terms of their peaks, though, it's Steel Pulse in a landslide. Handsworth Revolution is an absolute masterpiece.

ThaSaltCracka
07-22-2004, 06:48 PM
define enormous? less than 5% of the population?

I do know that Bob Marley was really popular in the UK and Europe, so I know they like Reggae over there, but the best stuff comes from Jamaica man, everything else is just reggae influenced or reggae sounding. BTW, I have heard Steel Pulse and they do sound good, so I am not knocking them.

besides it just sounds funny to say British reggae.... theres no such thing as American Reggae, its all just called reggae.

[/ QUOTE ]

Not really. british reggae is more dancehall/pop influenced. Jamaican reggae (dennis brown, nesta, etc.)is more of the roots stuff that you hear, as well as the hardcore dancehall (sly and robbie stuff). American reggae is, well, odd.
UB40 is kind of a glorified cover band akin to betlemania.

Uston
07-22-2004, 06:59 PM
define enormous? less than 5% of the population?

I have no idea, but I do know that Great Britain's reggae scene has been more prolific than that of any other nation not in the West Indies.

but the best stuff comes from Jamaica man

You're preaching to the choir. In the last 18 months I've spent nearly six weeks in Jamaica. Burning Spear, Wailing Souls, The Congos, Sugar Minott, The Mighty Diamonds, Ernie Ranglin. I could make a list of my top twenty favorite reggae bands/artists and Steel Pulse and Linton Kwesi Johnson would be the only non-Jamaicans on the list.

ThaSaltCracka
07-22-2004, 07:05 PM
I had never heard Burning Spear and then I bought his new album for some reason, I liked it. I don't own much Reggae but I have always liked it. Bob is obviously the best, I am sorry but theres no argument there IMO, I also like his sons new stuff (Ziggy). OK, here is my list.

1) Savatage - This band never truly got the recognition it deserved. They keep getting better with age. I highly recommend that anybody who can appreciate solid musicianship in a hard rock band check them out. Even if you may be turned off my the image they had in the 80's. They sound completely different today than they did 15 years ago.

2) AC/DC

3) Megadeth

4) Metallica - despite the POS CD they tried to pass off to the fans last year, they still rank among one of the greats.

I don't have a #5. After #4, it's just everything else.

Yep, Jake e Lee rocks.

I woodshedded and learned most of the (guitar) on the 1st album. I just love the raw feel to it. The 2nd one picked up where the 1st left off.

I got to see them live on their tour before Ray Gillen went into the hospital. This type of stuff kicks ass live. And they did.

Devil's Stomp is a riff i used to whip out on my bass player. He was a big fan of theirs too.

I'm with ya...hate that band and that whiney-ass dread-locked Jewish mama's boy. I'm Jewish and let me just say NO Jew needs to be wearing dreads.

tony williams was the man! my favorite quote:

"saying I'm a great jazz drummer is like saying all jordan has is a jump shot".

to me, the only drummer that gets me like tony is roy haynes, who is still kicking ass. and herbie hancock was in his early twenties when he played in that band! amazing.

I found out last week that my guitar instructor has done some work with Jackie McLean, who told him some funny stories about Tony Williams. After hearing Tony play several times, McLean really wanted him to move to NYC and play with him. The biggest obstacle? Getting permission from Tony Williams' parents. He was 16 at the time.

Sadly, I was out of town a couple months ago, and missed my chance to see Wayne Shorter in Miami. Heard it was good.

Well, I always knew that if I ended up being anybody's idol on 2+2, it wouldn't be for my poker advice...

Still, nice to be appreciated. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
