OK, this might be too hard to say, so lets put it into categories.

Rock: Rosalita, Bruce Springsteen

Pop: Themes from an italian restaurant, Billy Joel

Rap: Don´t like rap, so there´s no nomination from me

Musical song: Herode´s song, Jesus Christ Superstar

Country: Ain´t american, so what do I know. I like "The coward of the county" by Kenny Rogers ,though.

Classic: Il mio testoro, Don Giovanni, W.A. Mozart

What´s your favourites?

Best regards

Rock: Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry (or ding-a-ling by the same)
Pop: Reminiscing by Little River Band
Rap: Rippin by Sir Mix-a-Lot
Musical Song: not sure what this means, so I'll go with Rock Away by Beres Hammond

Kurn, son of Mogh

Rock: Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana)
Pop: I'll 2nd your nomination of Billy Joel (that entire album is excellent).
Rap: I'm Bad (LL Cool J) but I know very little rap.
Musical: The Impossible Dream (Man of La Mancha)
Country: Ghost Riders in the Sky (I like the Outlaws' version)
Classic: You can't beat the chorale in Beethovan's 9th

And I'll nominate the 9th Symphony as the greatest piece of music ever written.

OK, Falco was the only austrian who ever made real good music (although the version of "Ein Kompliment" which Christl Stürmer sang at Starmania might be one of the best interpretions of a song ever).

Anyway, don´t tell me you´ve ever seen "The sound of music". I honestly thought that nobody ever in Austria saw this movie.

BTW, nice to have a fellow austrian here.

Best regards

Here are my nominations. I added two additional categories. Blues and Metal. You really can't lump Metal and rock together, they are worlds apart IMO. Here you go:

Metal: The Four Horseman - Metallica

Rock: Baby Please Don't Go (One of the most covered Rock songs ever AC/DC's version is the best IMO)- Big Joe Williams

Pop: I don't listen to a lot of Pop but I like that Black Eyed Peas Song. Is it called 'Where Is The Love'?

Rap: Rap Superstar - Cypress Hill

Musical: Last Illusion - The Transsiberian Orchestra (From Beethoven's Last Night)

Classical: Tocata Fugue in D minor - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Blues: Death Letter Blues - Son House

Country: Devil Went Down to Georgia - Charlie Daniels

That song makes me cringe.

Any one of ten billy joel songs could be considered top pop songs.

Why the hell to you think I prefaced this by saying "I don't listen to a lot of pop"?

The only time I listen to it is when my girlfriend is in my car and I put it on to keep her happy. So to me, a good pop song only has to ge good enough for me to remember it 10 minutes after listening to it. Weather you like it or not that song has chorus that is pretty hard to get out of your head after hearing it.

Anyway, if you don't like it, submit your own list.

I pretty much only listen to hip-hop, and the nerdy variety at that- but I'll say that the greatest hip-hop song is "A Day Like Any Other" by Siah and Yeshua daPO ED.

I'll say this and everybody will be like "What", "Who"...

Rock: Foo Fighters - "Everlong"

Pop: Goo Goo Dolls - "Iris"

Rap: 3-way Tie... Tupac "Hit Em Up," Dre/Snoop "The Next Episode," DMX "Slippin"

Classical: another 3-way tie... "Prelude to Tristan and Isolde" by Richard Wagner, "The Rite of Spring" by Igor Stravinsky (especially considering the reaction this song received the first time it was played...), and "Appalachian Spring" by Aaron Copland.

Country: "One Last Time" by Dusty Drake (I hate 99% of country but this song touched me since it's about 9/11).

Techno (great genre in general to listen to while playing poker): Aurora - "Ordinary World"

EDIT: I forgot about "Southern Hospitality" by Ludacris. That song is killer rap too.

EDIT 2: Forgot about musical... "Cool" from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein

No argument with NWA, but there's better songs than Straight Outta Compton. I.E. Just Don't Bite It, I Ain't The One, Express Yourself, F*** The Police.

I can't believe I found the other person on the planet who listens to both Pixies and Les Miz. I'll second Debaser, although the version of "There Goes My Gun" from the BBC album is right up there.
