So as I understand it, in heads up play the button posts the small blind and is first to act pre-flop. And post-flop it reverts to the button being last to act?

Is this right? And why?

Yes, this is right.

Why is it right? Well, you can't have the big blind on the button, can you? Then it would be better to be BB than SB.

You are correct.

It's done to take away complete positional advantage to one player throughout the hand. Before the flop, the BB has "position". After the flop, the button has position.

Thank you!

A bunch of 'free' bar tournies have sprung up around here lately and all of them have the button be big blind. Their logic is the person to the left of the dealer is always the small, so it should be the same way heads-up. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. I've argued to no avail.

Is there a list (or lists) of rules somewhere on the internet that I can point these poor organizers to to finally put this to rest?

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I couldn't find it on PokerTDA, but it's pretty plain right here:

Now, if I could only be the one playing heads-up more often!
