How do various sites handle button movement when the big blind loses? At home, I try to preserve the blinds, making sure everyone pays BB or SB so this results in the current button keeping it and the new player behind him being the BB.

I noticed last night that Stars always moves the button so sometimes players get a break from being a blind. How do other sites do it, and how do various B&M places do it? Is there a standard?

Most online sites use a forward moving button, so no one has the button twice. Most casinos use a dead button so no one avoids paying the blinds. I find the casino method to be the most fair, since the advantage of being the button twice isn't as great as an advantage of not posting a big blind.

So if the BB busts, the player to his left posts the BB, the SB is the button, and there is no SB.
If the SB busts, the button does not move, and the blinds move to the next players.
If the button busts, the blinds can move regularly.

Actually a much easier way to think about it is:

If a blind busts, move the button and have players pay as if that player hadn't busted. So an empty chair can have the button for a hand or two if necessary to keep the blinds fair. In the case of the BB busting, no one posts the SB next hand.
