I am trying to create a Texas Holdem' tourney in my home town. To comply with our state gambling laws we will be playing for prizes not money and there will be no buy in just a sign in. Where can I find the best advice on being a great tournament director? Palo Duro

Have you played a lot in casinos or run decent sized home games or have relevant experience?

I'm curious, if there is no fee, but you are supplying prizes, what is the main motivation for this, and also how are you getting the prizes paid for etc. Just curious is all.

There have been some of these freerolls with prizes around my area lately....deal your own hands is a drawback....but I ore than suspect that the bar, hall, livingroom owner figures that they are making more money by having the people there (assumingly having to buy food and drink as the day goes on) than they would have otherwise on a Sunday (when these are held).

i would suggest offering your services to a charity of some type. check with your state gaming commission (most every state has them) for legalities. my state, for instance, allows up to 4 gambling related fund raisers per year per charity.

the charity gets 1/2 the prize pool minus your fee. use volunteers as dealers (be sure to have a training session). you can be the floor person to settle disputes. get sponsors to pay for supplies.

as for being a good tourney director, i'm sure that comes with experience. most people in your area would be happy enough just to have a tourney.

good luck!
