Day 4

My plans to go to the driving range got thwarted, when my friend called to tell me he already had played 18 holes. I decide to play a little longer than normal, and knock off a 3 hour session. I played alright, I don’t remember if I finished up or down.

4:30, time for the shower, move the car, get lunch routine. There’s an Omaha 8/b freroll at the NYPC at 6, so I go and check that out. Things went well for me—to a point. The tourney is kind of a joke. They wait until they feel like it to start. You get T300, the blinds start at 10/20 and double every ten minutes! But it’s a freeroll, so I can’t really complain. I do pretty well despite being really bad at Omaha.

I’m the chip leader by 200 when it condenses to one table (which takes a while b/c they let new people jump in for the first half hour as people bust out) Blinds are like 75/150 and I’ve got about 1100. I’m determined to play tight, b/c the pressure is on everyone else. Then again, this is a winner take all $300 freroll, so I need to play to have a shot. I need to make it to the last 3 to have a shot at a deal, I figure. Anyway, I get something ridiculous like A34T double suited and I open raise in MP. Only the blinds call. The board has two low cards and I play hard. I end up losing the hand when the board pairs giving this guy a boat and the nut low. I lose like half my stack. It was down hill from there and I leave 7th. Macaully Culkin is there again today, presumably to play the NL tourney they’re having. I played with him last week…he wasn’t very good.

I come back home, take care of the car, and play for an hour at 9:30. I kick ass during the hour, and break for dinner and Alias, which is the best series ever, btw.

I played for my last hour at 12 and give some back, but all in all, a pretty good day. I end by playing some small NL/PL tourneys on UB between 1 and whenever I bust out.

/images/graemlins/smile.gif Just yanking your chain...

In hand two I tend to fold AQ to a random player (especially when he's raising limpers), but I'll 3-bet an LAG that I have a good read on (and I think I can isolate him). Then again, I'm not super expereinced at 5/10 yet.

Peace,
J

Hi jason,

At 5/10, I play it the exact opposite. I always 3-bet AQ unless I have a read that says to do otherwise, which is rare.

I think it's pretty terrible to have folding be your default play with AQ from the button against a CO raise, limpers or no.

Hey Chris--the first hand is weird. I have played against players who would have exactly QQ here. If he was capable of capping with 99 or KT preflop, or if would check the flop following a cap without top set, then I would feel much better about going to 4 bets with him on the river. I might just call or only raise once against an extremely predictable player.

I like how you played hand 2 and am surprised that anyone advocated folding in your spot preflop.

Omaha8 is painfully boring.

As for my results:

Poker: 1070 hands.

Nutrition: Made more pancakes. Went to a great littel french bistro (http://www.gregoirerestaurant.com/gregoire/home.html) with Scrubette I got the ribeye and french fries. Scrubette got the fried shrimp. Both were wonderful. Got this ice cream (http://www.coldstonecreamery.com/secondary/creation.asp?id=4) for dessert.

Exercise: Scrubette and I walked to eat fatty french food, then walked even more to get a gigantic tub of ice cream. I also listened to sports radio (http://www.knbr.com/) this afternoon, which ought to count for something. I'm a bit of a talk radio geek, and didn't think that the bay area's sports station measured up to WFAN (http://www.wfan.com/) , New York's fantastic sports station. I think the Lakers got the better end of the deal (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page3/story?page=neel/040716) , by the way.

Culture: Listened to the aforementioned sports radio. Scrubette and I rented The Station Agent (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0340377/) , but Scrubette was too tired to watch it when we got back from dinner.

Socializing: I made plans to play at Lucky Chances (http://www.luckychances.com/) with local posters Garland and Jen. I'm looking forward to seeing these fabled California limit games. I'm not looking forward to paying the goofy button drop at the 9/18 game. Although, given how slow the Borgata games have gotten as more and more novices decide to sit 10/20, the drop might be a better deal.

Job Search: I have a meeting with a guy from a nonprofit I'm interested in working for tomorrow afternoon.

Most annoying new posting habit: Adding Salon (http://www.salon.com/) style hyperlinks all over my post.

Was it Salon that started that trend? I picked it up from Gabe and Tycho (http://www.penny-arcade.com/). And Lum (the mad), back in the day.

ObPoker: in hand #1, I put UTG+2 on J9 or QJ before I noticed he capped preflop. After I noticed that he capped preflop =) I'd have to say AA and KK are equally likely; QQ unlikely. I think he bet on the river because he was going to call a bet anyway, might as well bluff.
