I know the lakers can void his contract if he goes to the big house. so i assume that means he doesnt count against the salary cap.

The salary cap is so bizarre. A player who died (I think it was Reggie Lewis?) counted against the cap for the Celtics for a number of years.
I wondered why teams were going after Kobe given his legal circumstance. This is probably why. So if a player goes to prison he doesn't count against the cap, but if a player dies he does? Pro wrestling makes more sense.
