View Full Version : A Hole in my Game: Steal Gone Wrong

In hindsight, given my stacksize I'm thinking I definitely should have just pushed preflop on this hand. I think I got a little timid and hoped for a cheap steal. I think my play went further downhill from there. Comments? Should I have just pushed preflop? Given that I didn't and went for the 2.75x raise, after the minraise, should I have pushed over him? Folded even with 5:1 odds? Help me out, I'm extremely dissapointed in my play.

Is it, "If your stack is less than 10xBB, and you are going to go in for a raise anyway, then you should push it in preflop?"

Yeah I think it'd be a good idea to read the board more before posting a hand like this.

Maybe. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

We make it sound routine on this boards, which it really is, but how awful would it be if everyone who played SNGs knew this basic concept?

It would definitely make the SNGs tougher. This one concept alone has helped me quite a bit in 10+1 SNGs.

Remus,

What everybody/nobody is saying is that one of the Ten Commandments of Tournament Poker is that if you have less than 10xBB in your stack, any bet or raise you make needs to be all-in. (Of course the BB is making the same mistake, so don't feel like it's a secret we've told everyone but you.) Going all-in increases your folding equity by putting the maximum amount of pressure on your opponent, and prevents tough opponents from playing back at you (as this guy did).

So, yes, your instinct was right. All-in pre-flop.

I have some questions:

1) What range of hands will a typical BB re-raise a 3xBB bet during bubble play?
2) What range of hands will a typical BB call an all-in during bubble play?

3) What range of hands will you re-raise from the BB a 3xBB bet during bubble play?
4) What range of hands will you call an all-in from the BB during bubble play?

It would be cool is PokerTracker had some way of telling me what percentage of 3xBB bets (not just mine, but all hands ann bettors) when shorthanded successfully picked up the blinds, and what percentage of all-in bets when shorthanded successfully picked up the blinds. I'm curious if the % is signifigantly different.

Err, it depends on stack sizes and such. You can't just give a range of hands.

But I'd say you'll get called by 88-AA, AK-AJ, maybe KQ, Maybe AT-A8.

At this stage, there is no 3xBB bet from any good player. and I should think calling it would commit you to the pot, so the standards for calling a 3xBB and an all-in are about the same.

I probably call with 99-AA, AK and AQ.

Going all-in increases your folding equity
....
so the standards for calling a 3xBB and an all-in are about the same

Are not these two statements contradictory?

Haha, I bet poker-clueless people seeing Big Blind t200 (5 handed) and Hero(t1430) think this is some sort of video game or superhero matchup.

WILL OUR HERO SURVIVE AGAINST THE FIVE-HANDED BIG BLIND T200, OR WILL THIS BE THE END OF LIFE AS WE KNOW IT.

ok i'm sorry.
