okay, I have two questions....
1. How old are you? If you don't want to answer just say, I may or may not be old enough to be your father.
BTW, I am 22
2. Who were your favorite baseball players when your were younger?
Mine.... Griffey Jr., Kirby Puckett, and Ricky Henderson.

I'm 28. Favorite player...hmm...Steve Carlton. OK, maybe not. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I latched onto Nolan as my favorite player around 84/85, when he sat down Danny Heep for his 4000th K.

My other favorite player at that time, and this one is random, was Jack Perconte, 2B for the Mariners. Like him, I was also a 2B with no power, on my little league team. The Cardinals were my favorite team then (still are, really), so I liked Tommy Herr for the same reasons, although Herr had a bit more pop in the bat.

I use to dive for balls all the time in the outfield when I was in little league, as did almost every kid in Seattle when Griffey started out. We would dive for balls you didn't need to dive for, and dive for ones that you would never have a chance of catching, just because we wanted to think we were him..... Those were some good times.

1. Not old enough to be your father.
2. Mitchell Page - A's
Jack Clark - Giants

"The Rage" should have beaten out Eddie Murray, IMO, for the 77 RoY, but the A's were so abysmal that Murray took the vote.

Great game (http://retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B08290BOS1977.htm) that year...Monday Night Baseball, and The Rage and Jim Rice put on a show!

Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell and Manny Sanguien (speelling questionable)and Steve Blass (who played high school ball with my Dad and gave me a autographed ball) this was while he could still throw strikes
Once I moved to Minnesota, Danny Thompson, Rod Carew, Danny Ford, Lyman Bostock

I'm 112. Honus Wagner was my hero. He used to scoop up the ball at shortstop dirt and all and we'd see the pebbles come flying off the ball as it went to first base.

OK I'm lying. But the last sentence, according to those who saw him play, is true.

I'm 51. Mickey Mantle. In fact, when he passed away, my dad said well, your other father died today.

Barry Bonds/Tony Gwynn

Wierd because these two players are almost the opposite. Tony Gwynn was my inspriation to become a switch hitter. I am right handed but wanted to be like him so I practiced hitting left handed and one day in practice our coach had a little contest where everyone had to hit with the opposite hand. From that day forward he told me I was no longer hitting right handed vs right handed pitchers. My first 5 left handed plate appearances were all hits. That helped the confidence. I switch hit all through high school but was a pitcher so didn't get to hit much in college with DHs.

*Edit - Paul Molitor is up there too. I loved his swing...so quick and smooth.

That is awesome. Chet Lemon was great. My dad is a huge Tigers fan (Al Kaline of course was his favorite), and we went to a lot of Tigers/M's games when I was a kid. He and my brother and I used to play a game called "guess Larry" when we went, where we'd have to guess the outcome of Larry Herndon's at bat. My dad would always guess home run, with my bro and I always guessing ground out or strikeout /images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Anyway, Lemon, Parrish, Whitaker, Trammell, Gibson, Senor Smoke, Morris, Terrell, Willie Hernandez, Dave Bergman, Tom Brookins...that was a good Tigers squad!

I was at this game (http://retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B07010OAK1986.htm) at the Coliseum...Bernazard goes yard for the Tribe's 4th HR to that point, and Stew had had enough.

He knocks down Franco, and Pat Corrales comes out of the dugout, wanting Stew to be ejected.

Words are exchanged, and Corrales charges Stew, leads with his foot /images/graemlins/blush.gif and gets decked. That night on the local sports report, Stew - in his trademark high voice - says (quote approximate), "...he's a woman, a sissy. He knew he couldn't whoop me, so he tried to kick me..."

this reminds me of the story about Fisk and Deon. Baseball would be better with more players like those guys, I love the brashness and the fights. I loved the brawls the M's had with NY and Baltimore, especially that one in Baltimore that lasted for 15 minutes..... awesome stuff. I'm old enough to remember Ted Williams, retired in 1959 or 1960 but not Joe D. Ironically Williams was not that big a fan favorite until his later years after his retirement.

There was the well documented spitting at the fans incident that he was fined $5000 and also, he wouldn't tip his cap after his last game when he hit a homerun in his last at bat.

I am 34 years old and still remember this moment as if it was yesterday.

When I was 10 years old I absolutely idolized Miguel Dilone. Playing little league I emulated everything he did. He had this narrow batting stance and he would choke up on the bat a good 3 or 4 inches. That was the way I hit for a whole year.

Anyway, my parents decided to take me to an Indians game one sunday afternoon. We walked up to the ticket boothe and bought tickets for box seats right behind the home dugout. In those days you could buy great tickets on game day. A typical crowd would only be around 4 or 5,000 people. As we walked down to our seats I was absolutely thrilled to see my idol playing catch on the dirt in front of the dugout. I quickly borrow a pen from my mother. With glove in hand I rush down field side and shout "Miguel, Miguel...please sign my glove"? He looks up at me and replies "I am here to play ball not to sign autographs". He turned and headed into the dugout.

I was absolutely devistated. I don't think it was so much his denial to sign as it was the coldness of his reply that upset me.

I went back to my seat and tried to enjoy the game, but the day was tainted.

I'm surprised there isn't more obscurity? Mostly big name superstars. Anyway I'm 50 and my favorite as a young kid and growing up a White Sox fan my favorite was White Sox thirdbasman Pete Ward. After Pistol Pete went to pasture in my earlt teen years it bacame catcher Ed Herrmann.

I would have expected more obscure local favorites like my guys rather than nationally well known superstars.

EDIT - Oh yeah, the Krukker too. Because of him, I had delusions of being a professional baseball player until, umm, well, I still think I can make it.

Remember when the Krukker made his return from testicular cancer with the "If You Don't Like The Way I Play I'll Take My Ball And Go Home" t-shirt. The guy was awesome.

28.

Don Mattingly. Classy, quiet, hard worker. Still disappointed he didn't get a ring.

I dunno...there's a lot of guys on the Giants that could be my favorite player...but when you always find yourself chanting "BARRY! BARRY! BARRY!" the mantra just kinda sticks. Other personal favorites of mine include Kirk Rueter (Woody!) and Billy Mueller.

When I was real young, it was Peewee Reese. He had a TV feature before Brooklyn games (I'm 23) where he would take a group of kids and teach them some baseball fundamentals. He was also a marbles champion, a beautiful game that I believe is completely dead.

I also liked the Hoyt Wilhelm/Gus Triandos (sp) battery. Wilhelm was the first knuckleballer I was aware of. When he pitched for Baltimore against Evil Incarnate, the Yankees, it was fun to watch his victims striking out in ridiculous poses. In the spirit of reconciliation....

Once, when I was delivering papers, Yogi Berra stopped me to ask for directions (next light, turn left, four blocks down on your left (I'm sure he'd remember)). This was better than meeting the President. How could anyone not love Yogi? (Maybe you had to have been there.)

When I got in high school, I could recognize spikes on the skill curve. Bob Gibson and Maury Wills were two that I got to see "live" who astounded me.

1. 20 years old

2. Ken Griffey Jr, Kirby Puckett, Rickey Henderson, Kenny Lofton. Greg Maddux and Mike Mussina were my two favorite pitchers when I was young since back when I pitched I did not have an overpowering fastball so I claimed my style replicated theirs.

Rickey Henderson was always my favorite. I still have a few hundred baseball cards of just him including a couple rookies.
