Back when i was in my mid-20's, my normal workout was 3 sets of 30 reps at 195, but that was during the Carter administration.

How much does the bar weigh? Slap a couple of 10s on there, and I bet I could do that at least 5 times.

I can't decide which thread will have more embellishment, this one, or the SAT scores thread. I would bet that we'll soon learn that every single person in the country who scored 800 on their math and can bench 250, also posts on this site.

Sure I was a trekkie, but I was also a linebacker in HS (too small for a college LB, too slow for strong safety) /images/graemlins/cool.gif

FYI - at the time, I weighed about 190.

I have done countless thousands of reps -- 12 ounces at a time. Did more for my belly then my biceps, however.

A standard gym bar = 45 lbs.

Most I ever did was 315, 3 times. These days, I seem to be lifting more just getting up from my desk.

My best was 285x1 2 years ago. Unfortunately, I blew a disk deadlifting and I needed surgery. I messed up my lifting really good.

I am back in the gym now and I havent tried to max but I would guess around 240 or so. My goal is 315 (3 plates) in about a year.

225x16 is very good. My best is 225x10.

315x3 is unbelievably strong and there are only a few guys in the gym that can do that.

I was doing reps one day at 250 in the gym and Chris Hovan of the Vikings was doing reps next to me at 275. Im thinking, "hey Im pretty strong". Well that was just his warm-up weight. 10 minutes later he did 410x10 with no spotter and he made it look so easy. He could easily have do 5 more reps. That was the strongest guy I ever saw.

I suck...I'd be able to bench my weight, if I were to lose both legs in a car accident. I'll leave that calculation as an exercise for the reader.
--
A semi-amusing story is the reason I entered this thread, though. I'm at the gym, and this guy is in there on the bench. He's pretty strong, he's done some time at County, so of course, he's got a cute girlfriend.

He's working out light one night, 2x45 on each side (I've seen him do 3x45 on each side - 315 - with no problem).

His girlfriend walks over from the cardio equipment while he's in the middle of a set. He finishes, and she says, "How much is that?" The both pause for a good 10 seconds, considering the plate + bar combination and finally, he says, "It's more than 200 pounds."

Kids.

225x16 is very good.

Ummm, yeah. Very good for an NFL safety.

Right now I do 155 in my normal workout but I'm 55 and never try to max out anymore. In my prime, approached, but could never quite do the coveted 300.

I suspect there will be as much lying in this thread as there was in the SAT thread.

Bench: Record around 275 x 1, maybe a bit less; dunno know what I could do right now, I'm sure it's less now; I really don't like to Bench or Press as it is hard on the shoulder joints. I have been injured benching before so if I do it now I stay light/moderate.

Lat Pulldown: A year ago 290; have hit 310 in the past

Standing Calf Raise: A few years ago well over 900 x 3 reps. The 45-lb. plates were stacked like horizontal chips;-)

Don't care for heavy leg presses.

My point is that "very good" is an understatement. Benching 225 sixteen times is an absolutely incredible feat. There are plenty of guys in the NFL (and I'm not talking about defensive backs only) who can't approach that.

Interesting thread.

I only weigh 160 (6 feet tall), and that's on a good day.

The most I can bench is 195 twice, but that was a few months ago and I haven't been going regularly.

Flame away.

Buck Laughlin: Excuse me if this off the subject a little bit, but just take a guess at how much I can bench press. Come on, what do you think? Take a guess. 315 pounds, maxing out at 400!

Wow. There are some pretty impressive lifters in this thread. I'm pretty average in the lifting department. I weigh 170. 185x12. 205x8. 225x3. Never tried more than that. Maybe I could do a couple of pounds more, definitely not very much more without a lot more training than I've ever done.

Calf presses and squats, though, I can kick some ass. Soccer.

225x3 at 170 pounds is extremely good. Its important to remember that bench strength is a function of size and it shouldnt really be compared for people of different sizes.

Also, its a function of chest hieght and arm length, which completely change the dynamics and the leverage of the lift.

I cant squat worth crap. The highest I ever did was 225x5. Something about the motion is very hard for me. I could hack squat 800x8 though.

Isn't the combine record 225x43? 16 reps for a 2+2er is way damn strong

Utah
07-15-2004, 05:24 PM
I think that record is low.

The best number for the NFL combine in 2002 was 36 reps. There were several 30+ from the big guys and I believe one running back did close to 30. The lowest was 3 by a safety.

16 is impressive but it is not that high.

evidently, the unofficial NFL combine record is 45 reps. 73 is unbelievable, although ronnie colman is a pretty big dude.

Right now I'm at the 'Sponge Bob Square pants' stage. Which is a dilapidated bamboo stick with a whole raft of marshmallows skewed on each end. URGGGGGGGG!

Back in my young bun days, while attending Auto-Diesel Mechanic School, I took a weight lifting class. We had a competition at the end of the term and I finished third I think. There were about 30 students. Anyway I am quite sure that I never benched more than say 185 lbs. and I weighed about 148 then. I think we had to do three reps in the competition. What was the most enjoyable was we did some Olympic lifts. The clean and jerk was the nuts. The instructor was from Europe and he was a nut about the Olympics and soccer (he was the soccer coach too).

I think I cleaned and jerked about 8,000 lbs or so. Man was that heavy. It is all technique. You lift mostly with your legs. You really have to be quick and twist your wrists fast, and squat and lift at the same time, to get the bar up and balanced on the chest. Then the old UUUUFFFFFGGGGGGHHHHHH yell as you lift, spread the legs, and sort of dive beneath the bar at the same time thing. If something goes wrong you scoot back and toss the bar away. Only real He-men like me are even permitted to do this most dangerous lift.

Olé!!!!!!

I can't bench. I dislocated my shoulder in high school, played college baseball with it semi-messed up, and have very little stability now. I think I'll submit a buddy's stats and claim them as my own: 305 at 100.5 (he was a wc powerlifter).

Yep, size and body structure make a big difference. I find lat pulldown so much more natural than bench. I agree that at 170 El Diablo's numbers are impressive.

Sorry, I edited my post after looking up combine numbers. I remember seeing 73 somewhere and I thought it was Ronnie Coleman, but I could be wrong. I have a friend who is a pro natural bodybuilder and I will ask him if he knows.

The world records for 1 rep is 810.

Uston

I'm sure the record has been broken since then but I remember Tony Mandarich once had the record of 225x39. I think that was in 1989.

the kid from hawaii (Isaac Sopoaga) stopped at 42 this year because he thought the record was 41. he said later that, if he know it was 45, he probably would have gone for 46. said he felt great when he quit and could have done more.

When I was in college I was in powerlifting competitions. My best was 142.5 kg @ 75 kg weight class, passed in competition, so strict form, with a pause. Thats like 314 @ 165 lbs. I didn't wear one of those silly bench shirts. I did a little more a couple years later, but just in the gym and I was heavier.

Several guys I knew could do bench variations and overhead presses with 225 for pretty high reps. Not many PLers did flat bench for high reps. I had little reason to do more than 6 reps with anything.

The last time I touched weights was in 8th grade gym class. I benched 160. Two reps of 80 that is. I'm weak.

I hadda take a phys ed class in college and chose some bogus weightlifting class. It was for people who didn't really want to do much. Anyway, there was this one dude in the class who almost hurt himself with a 5lb weight on each side of the bar. He lowered the thing to his throat instead of his chest and needed a spotter to get it off. He went to the empty bar and his arms would quiver and shake after 1-2 reps. It was unbelievable and sort of scary to see. No, it wasn't me. I am weak, but just doing 12 oz curls gives you enough strength to lift an empty bar off your throat. /images/graemlins/ooo.gif

It's funny how things have changed. When I played football, 20 years ago, it was all about max power and bulk. The problem with that is the stress it puts on the joints. Many of the guys I played with have had shoulder problems related to the max out, max out mindset we were all taught. I've had my shoulder cut on once, and my back once too. Be careful in the weight room. High rep low weight is definitely the ticket for those of us who are no longer kids.

Good luck all,

Fitz
