I enjoyed SP though not nearly as much as Shrek. I guess I was thinking more animated films you can watch with kids. If not I would put South Park just behind Lilo and Stitch.

Ice Man

Top Gun, and its not even close.

I don't like "cartoons" per se, because they are unsafe. Every time I see a cartoon or animated film I get worried because they are dangerous.

But Top Gun takes my breath away.

I'm an old school animation fan. I hate hate modern animation. It's definately slick but the problem is that companies like Disney have a cookie cutter formula for every piece of garbage aminated feature they put out. Most of Disney's movies are the same story with different characters thrown in. It makes me sick. Companies like Disney know they can just phone it in most of the time becuase the parents are going to take their kids to see it regardless.

I would love to see what somebody like Ralph Bakshi could do with today's technology and a decent budget. Anyway, here's my list heavily ladden with Bakshi of course.

1) Wizards
2) American Pop
3) South Park
4) The Lord of The Rings
5) Akira

In no order:

Fantasia
Finding Nemo
Toy Story
Fritz the Cat
Snow White
Heavy Metal
South Park
The animated sequence in Kill Bill vol. 1

Some animated films are great because they broke new ground (most of the above 'broke some new ground' IMO), some are great for other reasons.

-Zeno

Edit: Wizards probably belongs also.

Monsters, Inc. didn't do it for me. The technology was very impressive, but the story and comedy were nothing special. Shrek I did enjoy. Shrek II not as much; it seems they ran out of real story and resorted to more obvious schtick and parodying of popular movies and television shows. Sadly, I have yet to see Spirited Away.

An animated movie I loved, and is good for kids, is The Iron Giant, which came out a few years ago. I recommend it highly.

Yes, for best animated sequence in a movie, so throw in Vertigo, too.

I think I'm the only card carrying dork on the planet who thinks that Akira is overrated. While its 15 hour or whatever length makes comparison with Akira unfair, I'd much rather watch the ongological muddle of Neon Genesis than the ontological muddle of Akira.

Spirited Away wins my award for animated movie to watch with your kid. Monsters Inc comes in second.

South Park was great.

The Kill Bill sequence is gorgeous.

Grave of the Fireflies (Japanese animation, and one of the greatest anti-war films of all time)

Sleeping Beauty (And listen to Miles Davis's version of Someday My Prince Will Come from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which ties with Sleeping Beauty for best Disney animation)

The Short Films of Jan Svankmajer (sort of like the influence for those Tool videos)

Toy Story is the best of the Pixar type CGI stuff, even though the process seems a bit cold to me

HBO once did a few Shakespeare's plays in half hour animated form. These were absolutely fablulous. The Tempest may have been my favorite.

Wallace and Grommit. Claymation at its best.

The Triplets of Belleville--French animation. Here's what Jacque Tati would make if he had been an animator.

C'mon guys, live a little.

Chicken Run (I know it's claymation, but who gives a rip)
Toy Story 2 (I thought it was better than the original)
Beauty and the Beast
Iron Giant
Tom and Jerry (okay, not a movie but the classic Tom & Jerry cartoons are the best)
Nemo

I'd rather watch the cluster-F that is Star Blazers, but that wouldn't count as a movie.

Akira is overrated if you want to compare it to, say Casablanca, but compared to the general mindless crap that gets painted, this one actually had character with some depth and that is why I like it above the other 90 minute animated movies.

"Okay, we will call this Operation get behind the darkie"
(zooms to pictures of all the black soldiers attached to tanks and airplanes)

-Satan and Saddam were gay lovers, c'mon that was hilarious.
-The Canada jokes were also on point.
- Winnona Ryders ping-pong ball show.....

Nah, I thought they were trying way too hard. the thing I loved about south park from the very first episode I saw, was the feeling that Matt and Trey were just screwing around, doing what they wanted to do, and that they were fricken hilarious on their own. The movie seemed, to me, like they strapped their game faces on and told themselves that they had to be funny, so they forced a lot and made it over the top.

I used to work in Emeryville, down the street from Pixar (which is across the street from the Oaks, btw). since I was in health and safety and we did ergo for our company, we arranged to meet with thhe pixar ergo coordinator for a tour of her site. coming from a poor biopharma, we were amazed at the beautiful campus, the private movie studios, the gym, and all the other amenities that we didn't have.
when we got to the second floor, we came upon the company trophy case. Most companies have these for industry awards and plaques. Looking inside, I asked the tour guide "is that an oscar?" she said yes, then looked down the hall and said "and here comes the guy who won it" kind of made the excellence in cancer research crap at my company pale a bit in glamour.

4 Faves, in no particular order:

Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Watership Down
Snow White

Honroable Mentions:
Heavy Metal - liked the soundtrack, hated the animation...good nyborg, man.
The Lord of the Rings - should have been so much better, but too much "red eyes in the dark".

I totally disagree. I thought the movie was better than the show. And the show is the greatest animated show ever (that's right, better than the Simpson's, but its close).

At the moment SP is the best 30 minute show on TV. The best of them all however is Sopranos.

I asked my 4 year old niece what her favorites are. I've gone out of my way to have her see as many as possible.

1. 8 Man
2. Spirited Away
3. Shrek
4. Ninja Scroll
5. Akira

Obviously she doesn't understand that Spirited Away is by far a better movie than 8 man, but cut her some slack.

This was a lot of: so is this better than this? It's kinda hard to pull a top 5 out of a little kid.

Some I'll nominate for consideration:

Watership Down, Transformers, Macross Plus (call the miniseries a movie), and The Hobbit (the Lord of the Rings cartoon was garbage from the same mongoloid that did Heavy Metal).

Glad to see some other Beauty and the Beast fans here.

Beauty and the Beast
South Park
Beavis and Butthead Do America
Spirited Away

Haven't seen a fifth that ranks with those. All the Pixar ones are good but not great.
