OT, but this reminds me, I think the SNL best of Will Ferrell 2 was incredibly disappointing.

Best rock song...so subjective, but one of my favorites would be Pinball Wizard.

Well... I guess it depends on whether the question really is 'best', or 'greatest'. If it's 'greatest', then it's got to be something classic, hugely popular, and/or uber-influential, something Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Beatles, Queen, or Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", etc. For this, I'm going to state the obvious and cite "Stairway to Heaven". Since this question is 'best', I'm going to have to say it's Radiohead's "Paranoid Android". It's just a bit shy on popularity and influence to be considered for greatest, but it's definitely the best. Honorable mention goes to the Smashing Pumpkins for "Zero", "Rocket", "Drown", and "Bullet With Butterfly Wings". It's so hard to name just one - or even 4 or 5.

Ahh that reminds me of a classic moment over J-Term this year. My dorm was almost completely empty cuz most people are still home but I had to be there cuz I'm on the track team. Anyways one night I hooked up my roommates stereo to my computer, and his stereo is immensely loud. I blasted Dont fear the reaper over those speakers at maximum volume and the song could be heard anywhere in my four floor, two wing dorm. It was a beautiful moment.

Hmm. Not a Who fan? Given the amount of inflammatory comments posted on this site, I certainly hope I wasn't the first person to post something meriting this response from you!

I guess the lyrics could be offensive...I apologize if that's the case. Didn't mean anything by it.

On the other hand, if you're merely offended by my musical tastes, well, I never claimed to have any in the first place!

Other favorites of Nolanfan:

- Break on Through, The Doors
- Sympathy for the Devil, The Rolling Stones
- Born to Run, Bruce Springsteen

I do like The Who as well.

It's gotta be one of the following:

Layla (Derek and The Dominos)
Time Has Come Today (The Chambers Brothers)
When The Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin)
War Pigs (Black Sabbath)
Mouth For War (Pantera)
Gimme Shelter (The Rolling Stones)
Helter Skelter (The Beatles)
Looking At You (The MC5)
Raw Power (Iggy and The Stooges)

There are more, but I gotta go now.

Among the contenders-
Gimme Shelter
Paint It Black
Stairway To Heaven
You've Got Another Thing Comin' (Heavy Metal division)
Don't Fear The Reaper
Baba O'Riley
Behind Blue Eyes
Train In Vain
Under Pressure (does this qualify as rock?)
Paradise By The Dashboard Lights (operatic rock division)

I am sure I have left off any number of good tunes, but those are in the running for sure.

Novelty song! Says who? The rock gestapo?

That song is a great modern rock tune that also gives a nod to artists of the past like Jerry Lee Lewis who paved the way for artists that came after.

While I love "Just One Fix and just about every other song Alain Jorgensen has cranked out, I wouldn't classify this as one of the greats of all time. The main riff, while cool, is kind of cliche.

This is kind of why I prefaced my nomination by saying how subjective this whole thing is.

Anyways, 'Jesus Built My Hotrod' is my nomination and I'm sticking to it. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Cliche, or definitive? Hmmmm. From the Ministry catalogue, I would have to go with Burning Inside.

Anyway, obviously it's subjective, until, of course, we begin discussing songs that transcend opinion, and simply ARE great.

For greatness, I stick to my list.

For subjectivity, I submit the following:

Debaser (The Pixies)
The Rover (Led Zeppelin)
Blood Promise (live version) (SWANS)
Bad Penny (Big Black)
Forty-Six and Two (Tool)
The Becoming (Nine Inch Nails)
What We All Want (Gang of Four)
No More Heroes (The Stranglers)
Letdown (Radiohead)
Mutiny In Heaven (The Birthday Party)

I guess this is another thread.

I'm always amazed when people tout "Stairway to Heaven" as one of the all-time great songs. Bonham has a couple of magnificent licks during the bridge, but I find it otherwise ho-hum. I'm not a big Zeppelin fan, but it seems to me that it's the third- or fourth-best song on side one of their fourth album.

"The Rover (Led Zeppelin)"

Great minds, n all... /images/graemlins/cool.gif We're not alone, either. I know yea Zep fans & music critics who agree, at least as far as it being Zep's finest studio moment.

FWIW Jimmy Page once said he considered The Rover to have his best guitar work, although Tea For One is his favorite Zep track.

I think Ministry hugs, but "Vex & Siolence" may be the coolest song title ever.

my understanding of the story on ohio is that CSNY were set to play at the protest, before people got shot. they showed up and it happened before they played, neil young literally wandered off into the woods, and came back a short period later with that song. pretty amazing if it's true, the song is ridiculously good.

Nothing personal, Andy, but I have never understood why people like this song so much.

Head On - The Jesus and Mary Chain

On a dark desert highway
Cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas
Rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance
I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy, and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
This could be Heaven or this could be Hell
Then she lit up a candle
And she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely place (background)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year
Any time of year (background)
You can find it here
You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany twisted
She's got the Mercedes bends
She's got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
That she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
Sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember
Some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain
Please bring me my wine
He said
We haven't had that spirit here since 1969
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely Place
Such a lovely Place (background)
Such a lovely face
They're livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise
What a nice surprise (background)
Bring your alibies

Mirrors on the ceiling
Pink champagne on ice
And she said
We are all just prisoners here
Of our own device
And in the master's chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember
I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
Relax said the nightman
We are programed to recieve
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave

I really was not much of a rock fan, until I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit, so that gets my vote.

It may not make the list of top 100, but I am partial to Red Barchetta by Rush...

I prefer the Johnny Cash version.
