Speaking of car trips back from AC and baseball, I will give you our trivia challenge.

Create an all girl team (MLB players whose first name is PRIMARILY a girl's first name. i.e. Shannon Stewart) Get a starter at each position:
C
1b
2b
3b
ss
of
of
of

then have five starting pitchers, 4 relief and a closer.

I'll post what we came up with in a bit.

We only used active players.

ITs a lot more fun if you don't have to look up players. IF you look up players it isn't that hard.

I'm too lazy to do all the positions and this guy isn't active either, so i've broken all the rules but my vote for one of the outfield positions is Carroll Hardy. I like this choice since he is the answer to a good trivia question. Who is the only man to ever pinch hit for Teddy Ballgame? Answer: Carroll Hardy.

Well, if that was the question I asked then you would have won. but it wasn't, so you don't.

But I'm the only one who has responded. Doesn't that count for anything?

1b - Shawn Green

That's just mean. I said has a name like a girl, not "bats like a girl."

Shawn Green is a tough one. I think of Shawn as primarily boy's name, but not with that spelling.

Pretty good so far. Pitchers are actually the easiet category.

That could be a whole 'nother thread, as in Tom Goodwin, Barry Bonds, and Johnny Damon - the all "throws like a girl"* outfield. Could add in Frank Thomas, but it's tough to find left-side infielders and catchers that can't throw...

* - To any offended readers, chill out...it's just an expression. reflecting that kind of short-armed, flip-from-the-ear throw.

Sidney Ponson, Chris Reitsma, Casey Fossum....

Hmmm. This is tough.

Not sure if these two are still playing but Connie Mack and Dale Berra.

Well if you're going to throw the Babe in there, then how about his teammate, Lou Gherig.

Toro

Ok, I finally came up with a current one, for the Manager.

Terry Francona

Babe Ruth isn't active.

Good Job Toro. You get a gold star!

Babe Ruth isn't active.

I went back and checked and still can't find that qualifier anywhere in this thread.

Also, I was going to ignore this...

MLB players whose first name is PRIMARILY a girl's first name. i.e. Shannon Stewart

...but it's driving me nuts. The abbreviation "i.e." means "that is"; "e.g." means "for example".

I said we only used active players. Sorry if I didn't make it clear that you should too. e.g. not babe ruth.

better? /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Starting pitcher has to be Randy Johnson. And how about Coco Crisp(that's got to be a girl's name) for OF.

ArchAngel71857

We argued for a while on whether Randy was a girl's name or a guy's name. I'll go ahead and allow it, but the answers I will post don't have Randys on them.

Coco crisp is not a girl's name.

a) he's too fast
b) I think its his nickname
c) It's a cereal.

I thought of a right handed setup man out of the bullpen. Kelly Wunsch.

can we agree that it's a female rapper's name?

Toro

Alright then, I'll substitute Jamie Moyer for my left handed starting pitcher and team him up with catcher Sandy Alomar for a batterymate. Sandy's brother Roberto comes close if we could only change that o to an a.

If we use Coco Crisp as a quote genderless name, how about Pokey Reese?

DonWaade
07-12-2004, 07:46 PM
Names that I have not seen: Lew Ford, Kerry Wood, Brett Tomko, Hideo Nomo(not sure about that one, but we do not have many comparisons and he/she looks kinda girly) Angel Hernandez, Mike Tyson err wrong sport. Oops

I'm not giving in on Coco just yet. Isn't there some fashion maven named Coco Chanel?

Some celeb just named their daughter "Coco". Is it a stupid name for a girl? Yes. But it's a girl's name. (C'mon...if someone said they met someone named "Coco", you would assume it was a chick.)
