Dude, this is like, fun. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

WITHOUT LOOKING ANYTHING UP (cubswin /images/graemlins/tongue.gif), name the all-time best hitting players by BA for each position: 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, and C.

A friend from high school and I made our lists during class one day and I'm proud to say I got 5 or the 6 right. /images/graemlins/grin.gif Somebody beat me!

1b Wally Pipp....or was it that guy who took his place?

1B was the one position I got incorrect. I put Wally Pipp, and it wasn't him.

EDIT: Just remembered, it was my friend was picked Pipp. I guessed Sisler, and it wasn't either.

Ive given up guessing so i went to look for the right answers. Anyone who gets 1st base is a cheater /images/graemlins/smile.gif Im still not sure on the catcher though....that one is tough.

Anyone who gets 1st base is a cheater.

I remember thinking that hardly anyone would know that too when I looked it up back in high school.

So far, nobody's correctly named the 1st Baseman or Catcher.

1B : ???
2B : Rogers Hornsby
3B : Wade Boggs
SS : Honus Wagner
OF : Ty Cobb
C : ???

Hints:

Nobody will guess 1B unless they're a cheater. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
The Catcher is a HOF'er.

is C Cochrane? I remember reading his stats somewhere and they were pretty gaudy...

The Catcher with the best career BA is indeed HOF'er Mickey Cochrane. Though I'm not sure "gaudy" is the right word to describe his career stats...

I wouldnt have gotten the catcher in a million years... though piazza is not too far behind.

Also...i think Lou gets an honorable mention at first base. He is only .002 off the lead and the guy who is in first played way too long ago.... for christ sake he was born before the civil war!!! Sisler had a career .34015 while Lou had a .34008... close enough to call'em tied /images/graemlins/smile.gif

If I were to assemble an "All-time" roster, Lou would most definitely be my starter at first. His stats are far superior to Sisler's in just about every area except BA. But, of course, everybody's favorite Players League First Baseman, Dan Brouthers gets the nod for highest career BA at 1B (Okay, he was NL, but PL was way cool in the 1800's).

I actually thought Cochrane... but actually thought that answer would be too EASY! /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Should just go with my gut instinct.

Now that I am actually looking at his stats, while his career totals aren't anything to write home about, I'd say .320/.420/.480 career totals are pretty gaudy, even if he played almost his entire career in an offensive era. The bottom line is he finished his career with an OPS 128 points higher than the league average, and that's mighty impressive for anyone, much less a catcher.

I was referring to your misusage of the word "gaudy" rather than a lack of impressive career numbers on Cochrane's part. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Misuse? I consider myself a grammar nazi... I think that's correct usage, isn't it?

Gaudy refers to something showy, yes, but is meant to be used in negative context. It's more synonomous with tawdry or ostentatious.

Interesting.... I only used the word because I've seen it used countless times in newspapers, etc. in a similar context. If you do a search for 'gaudy career numbers' or something on google, you can see. Hmm, I will have to do more research on this.
