I'm going to be making my first trip to vegas ever with my girlfriend. Would anyone have any tips for a first timer in terms of where to play, where to eat, shows to see, things to do, etc.? I'd be very appreciative of any help.

girlfriend huh? well that queers the playing part lol...

bellagio is a must see, the water that is...lots of great eats there too. mirage is a legendary buffet place although i never got a chance to eat there so the "legendary" thing is 2nd hand. the venetian has those cool boaty thingies and you absolutely MUST take your significant other to the spiramint rhino.

have fun!

Where to play depends on what limits you are thinking of playing.

I was there in March and the best three buffets were: Bellagio, Paris, Alladin, in that order. We'd eat a big lunch and were so full it was usually a snack for dinner and we were good to go.

The Ballagio has the water show, and inside the casino they have a pretty sweet indoor garden with a butterfly aviary thing if you or your lady are into that sort of thing.

We hit Second City Comedy show at the Flamingo, it's a skit based comedy show with a long history. Very good and pretty reasonable at around $35 a ticket. There was rumor that you could ask for a 2 for 1, but it didn't work for us.

Walk the shops in Ceasars.

If you got the $$, Lance Burton was one of the best magic shows I have been to. It's one thing to make a lady disappear, but how he gets those birds to work in the act so perfectly is beyond me.

One of the cool things about vegas, especially if you have never been there before and are in good health, is just to walk from casino to casino on the strip and explore. You will run into all sorts of stuff to look at and do.

You mean Freemont Street and not the strip joint, right?

I guess my comedy stylings are too subtle for mere mortals. Let me try again.

If you don't mind going a few miles off Strip, check out Makino. It's a sushi-themed buffet, and unlike many other such buffets (i.e. Todai), the sushi is actually very good. And you can sometimes get raw shucked oysters too. It's like $25 or so, and worth about twice that (at least for what I eat /images/graemlins/grin.gif.)

Yeah, they really hose you for those $2.99 steak and eggs deals and free, decent shows. And don't get me started on the $0.99 shrimp cocktails - what a gip.

Thanks for the advice, I'm definately looking forward to getting out there and playing in some nice B&M cardrooms...In the past I've been limited to the Florida reservations and an occasional Biloxi trip so this will be a great change of pace. Also kind of curious as to how tight Vegas games are in comparison to my Hard Rock, Biloxi, and online experience. I'm kinda thinking that they are going to be much looser for some reason (I figure more tourist = more money, and people are there to gamble right...not play odds. but this is all being said ignorantly and I know there will be tons more sharks in the water). We are going to be staying at Harrah's. Does anyone have any prior experience or ever heard anything about the hotel?

You know, I think that if my wife and I went to Vegas she would actually want to see one of the well-known strip clubs. :P
