my computer is getting invaded what I believe is spyware. recommendations for good software to battle the problem is most welcome. I use Mozilla Firefox for my browser but I still have a problem. Also if anyone can direct me to a list of processes that are normal for running my computer I would appreciate it. Then I can get rid of all the programs that are unnecessary.

Probably the most highly regarded and free sypware remover is Ad-aware. (http://www.download.com/Ad-aware/3000-8022-10214379.html?tag=lst-0-2). There is also a free program called Spybot, but with this you better know what you are doing. Reviews on Spybot are more mixed (check www.download.com (http://www.download.com) aka CNET).

I've been told the best dope on which background services can be safely removed or disabled can be found on Black Viper's (http://www.blackviper.com/index.html)home page.

Regarding programs running in the background, I'm relatively sure this is depends on what other software is running. Perhaps someone else can post some good links for both of us.

Regards,

Rick

Yikes!! What operating system are you using? Certainly cannot be windows XP or 2000. You are missing many required processes to even run your PC if you are using windows. You sure you copied them all?

Off the top those webrebates can all be safely terminated. It looks like you may have Gator or weatherbug installed on your PC either now or in the past.

Rick is right Adaware is great and so is spybot.

I didn't the list the processes classified as "system". I assumed those are required. I only listed the ones classified as "owner"

boris, once before, i suggested people have a second hard drive that they boot up when using the internet for surfing around. no one commented that it was a bad idea. seems this would keep viruses and other crap away from your good stuff. and if it got infected badly you could just format it and start overeasily.
i use netscape and keep java script off and never have had a virus or spy ware. i dont get the popups either this way.

Ad-aware is a good spyware program. I would also recommend that you use a good firewall program like Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp) which can be downloaded for free.
