View Full Version : Did I play this right?

About 1/3 of the way through a PP NL multi. Avg chips around 1800 or so. HERO has 1700. VILLAIN has 1400.

HERO is on the button. Blinds 50-100. One limper before VILLAIN (late MP). VILLAIN makes it 250. HERO on button ponders AK spades. Trying to take it now, and at worst play it heads up, HERO makes it 1250. VILLAIN calls and the two of us see the flop.

Flop is essentially rags (5-8-T) with 2 spades. VILLAIN checks. HERO ponders and goes all in. VILLAIN calls and flips over J 5 of diamonds. HERO gets no spade, no K, no A and is crippled.

QUESTION: How might you have played AK suited on the button in this situation? Was this just a case of a crazy call with J5 and just a bad beat?

All input appreciated.

Thanks, Leapus

You needed to move all-in preflop. You are never going to fold and leave yourself with 450 chips so move all-in here. A good rule of thumb is if a raise is more than a third of your stack just move all-in. Of course his call was awful, but cards happen.

I can't believe Villain's play, honestly. It's like... wow.

That being said, you should've just shoved PF. Your raise to T1250 was most of your stack. When you make a play like that, you're pot-committed. Either raise less, leaving yourself enough left to get away, or get it all-in.

I still can't believe Villain called 5x his raise out of position with J5, though. Or that he called the flop all-in. That's just ridiculous.

I agree that all in is the play here preflop. Post flop is an easy push, too.

By the way,
I'm tired of typing "pot-committed"....I never know if I'm spelling it right (write?) and it's just a pain in my ass. So, from here on out, I'm going to write PC'd and everyone else will just have to deal with it.
Who knows, maybe it will catch on.

PC already stands for too many things, (do you really want to be politcally corrected to a hand, how about personal computered to a hand) there has to be another way. I say we make this its own thread.

That's too large of a raise not to go all-in. Raise to $500-$600 or go all-in.

I move it in preflop also.

His preflop play was horrible. On the flop he's getting about 20-1 so he can't fold.

However, why are you raising to 1250 when you have a stack of 1700? If you're called, what can you possibly accomplish with 450 chips and a pot of 2500? Would you actually fold to any bet on the flop?

A pot size raise would be 1000. That's more than 40% of your stack, thus the proper bet is all-in.
