Just thinking that two who left us recently, Ray Charles and Marlon Brando, might have been the two coolest of their time.

It wasn't as recent, but I always thought that Gregory Hines was the smoothest cat around.

Don't worry Andy. I'm still among the living.

When I was young enough to know what cool was, I thought it was Fred Astaire, Cary Grant and Bugs Bunny. I knew I was doomed to be Frank Sinatra, always playing the role and always failing. Dig it!

Al Roker. He is an absolute gentlemen with the tourists. He must allocate at least 10-15 minutes to cross the street to the studio to oblige (posing for photos/signing autographs) as many fans as time permits.

Not so cool in his personal life, but Miles Davis sort of defined the word.

At a golf tournament one time, I saw a couple kids run up to Jay Haas as he finished his round. They were waving something to sign, and Haas waited for one to hand him a pen. The kids didn't have one--a cardinal mistake for autograph seekers. Haas looked at his caddy and told him to grab a pen out of the bag, and he stood there and signed for everyone that ran up. Most wouldn't have bothered.

I'm sure most of the kids said, "Who the hell is Jay Haas?" But I've been a fan of his since then.

He and Brando were buddies. They were set to make another film together a few years ago in Paris and the money didn't come through, so they both went home. I think they were already on location and the whole thing fell apart.
